Am back yet again, have unravelled my yellow hillock sweater back down to beginning of yoke as sweater was baggy on the yoke am now going to knit the yoke from the waheca sweater from the wild knits book.
The waheca sweater is sleeves and body on yoke but has raglan shaping on arms, will this stop the yoke going baggy on the chest and stop the underarms cutting in when my son lifts his arms.?
I’m sorry to hear about the Hillock sweater. Sometimes the yoke is too deep to fit nicely. There aren’t great pictures of the Waheca sweater (in fact there’s only an unhelpful photo on Ravelry).
If there is a schematic that gives the yoke depth you can see if that will work or adjust as needed to shorten. Otherwise your row gauge may help with an estimate. The additional raglan shaping may help too.
Is there a similar sweater of his that you can measure from?
Have knitted him 3 wilderness sweaters from wilderness knits 38 fitted but tight underarms, when lifting his arms,so knitted the other two 43 chest same problem with tight underarms. Son is slim build but wide shoulders thought raglan might make looser underarms
They might but it may help to increase across the front, back and sleeves. Does the pattern have to be a yoke? Maybe a fitted or drop sleeve would work better?
Take a look at the Ann Budd books “The Knitter’s Handy Book of Sweater Patterns” and “The Knitter’s Handy Book of Top-Down Sweaters.” Her recipes for different types of sweaters may help. The books are often in the public library or from second hand sources.
Thanks, I’m ashamed to say the reason I knit yokes is I make a mess sewing sweaters together. I do a passable weaving in on the stranded colourwork but still bodge the underarms. Knitted myself 6 sweaters before Xmas all got holes where my stitching undone.
Painful but no shame in it. Seaming takes practice. I seamed using a back stitch for years until I learned mattress stitch. The back stitch may be easier to work, looks fine and is still my go to when matching stripes.
There are also top-down contiguous sleeves although they can be a bit fussy to work (lots of marker at least for me).
Finished as far as neck son tried it on looks like he needs next size up raglan on the yoke makes a big difference hangs better a much neater finish
All ends well will just add a polo neck then I have a new sweater and while I’m waiting for more yarn for sons bigger size sweater I can knit another sweater for myself.
Thanks for all your help
So glad you have a plan for his new one and that you’re gained a sweater. Have fun with it and please let us see a photo when you finish!
