Help with Raglan Baby Sweater Pattern

The pattern I’m using is here:

http://www.knittingonthenet.com/patterns/babysweragcard2.htm

I’ve already completed the back, and now I’m working on the left front.

Left Front
With smaller needles, CO 35 sts. -- Done
K1, p1 rib for 11 rows. -- Done
Next row: K1, p1 rib 7 sts, then slip these sts to a stitch holder, work rib to end. -- Done I think
Change to larger needles and work 36 rows in St st.

This is where I’m stuck. I left the stitches on the holder but as I work in stockinette… there’s this little flap hanging out at the bottom. It doesn’t match the picture, because should actually be forming the buttonhole “area” of the sweater? Was I supposed to pick up the stitches? These poor seven stitches are lonely.

Update - New question below

Argh I’m a genius.

I just read the bottom of the pattern (because when I printed it out, it wound up on page 3, so I didn’t look that far) and now I see what to do with the stitches.

I may be back with more questions though… this is my first sweater since I was too scared to do it in the round and wanted to do it in pieces first. I’ve made a vest so far that wasn’t in the round, but in pieces for practice.

I told you I’d be back.

I’m working on the right front of the pattern now, and i’m at the part where it says “reverse shaping.” I want to make sure I’m doing this right.

So the left front pattern decreases says:
Left Front
Shape Armholes And Neck
Row 1 (RS): BO 4 sts, work to last 2 sts, K2tog.
Rows 2 and 4: Work even in St st.
Row 3: K1, sl1, psso, work to end.
Row 5: K1, sl1, psso, work to last 2 sts, K2tog.
Rep last 4 rows until 2 sts rem.
K2tog.
Fasten off.

So for Row 1 decrease for the right, do I start with k2tog or SSK? Then I will work in the row, then bind off the last four stitches.
Row 2 and 4 are purl.
Row 3 I continue in Stockinette until the end, and then do I k2tog, SSK…?
Row 5 I start with k2tog or SSK?, then work, then sl1, k1, psso?

I found this on the pattern you had linked hope it helps. I didn’t know how to explain it on my own.
Almost all cardigan patterns will give you exact instructions for knitting one front; the other front instruction will tell you to knit it the same way, but reverse shaping.

The neck and armhole edges are at their logical respective places. With the right side facing the public, hold the left or right front up against you. This is the easiest way to tell which is the armhole edge and which is the neck edge if you get confused.

To reverse shaping, work the shaping at the opposite end from where you worked it for the first side. Usually you will begin to shape an armhole by binding off stitches. If you bound off the stitches at the beginning of a right side row for one front, you would bind off stitches at the beginning of a wrong side row for the other front. This keep the shaping on the correct edge.

If you are increasing or decreasing at the beginning of a row for one front, you would increase or decrease at the end of the row for the other front.

I figured out the reverse shaping. Whew!

So I started work on the sleeves, but I think I interpreted wrong, because my sleeve came out humongous.

Sleeves
Make two. Got that.
With smaller needles, CO 33 sts. Ok done.
K1, p1 rib for 16 rows (this makes a nice cuff you can turn back to adjust sleeve length as needed). Done!
Change to larger needles. Got that, that’s done.
Work 36 rows St st and AT THE SAME TIME inc 1 st each end of Rows 3, 11, and 19 - 39 sts. Hence the problem.

 1. So at each end of rows 3 and 11, I increase one stitch. I was using KFB.
 2. Inc. 1 st 19-39 sts. Where is this on the sleeve? I’m totally confused here.

So when I first knit the sleeve, I increased at each end of ROW 19-39. Then when I started to reduce, the sleeve seemed way too large. I confirmed it by trying to line it up with the pieces that were already done.

How many stitches should I have on my needle when I start shaping/reducing?

As for the rest of the sleeve:

Shape Armhole And Cap
BO 4 sts beg next 2 rows. Understood
Purl one row. Understood
Cont in St st and dec 1 st each end next and every 4th row Understood. I was using ktg and k1, sl 1, PSSO.
until 7 sts rem as follows:
K1, sl1, psso, work to last 3 sts, K2tog, k1. Got this.
BO. Understand this.

inc 1 st each end of Rows 3, 11, and 19 - 39 sts

You’ve misread that, you inc a st at both ends of rows 3, 11 and 19 which gives you a total of 39 sts (33 plus the 6 sts added)

Ok, now that makes sense. Thanks!! I was thrown off and didn’t even think to look that way.
