Help with Quilted Stockinette pattern

I’m having a bit of trouble understand the quilted stockinette. If you have VK Stitchionary, this is pattern 56:

Q1 (quilt 1) Insert RH needle under the loose strand at front of work and k next st, pulling out st under strand.

Rows 1, 3, 5, 7 (WS): Purl
Row 2: K2 sl5, k1 rep from * end k1
Row 4: K4 *Q1, k5; rep from * to last 5 sts, Q1, k4
Row 6: K1, sl3, *k1, sl5; rep from * to last 5 sts , k1, sl3, k1.
Row 8: K1, *Q1, k5; rep from * to last 2 sts, Q1, k1
rep rows 1-8

The part I don’t understand is the Q1 part. What loose strand is this referring to? It can’t be the strand made by slipping 5 stitches, can it? Because it doesn’t say to slip wyif, so that strand is in the back. Do they just mean the strand in between stitches, the same one you would pull up if you were doing M1? :??

Thanks.

Hmmmm, any stitch pattern like that I’ve ever seen has had the loose strand from slipping stitches at the front of the work. You sure that the stitch pattern doesn’t say anywhere that the slipped stitches are to be done wyif?? Otherwise, it doesn’t make sense.

I typed the pattern just as it is in the book, I think. I was thinking they must mean to slip wyif. I’ll try that. I tried that 1/2 way through the pattern and it wasn’t looking right, but I guess I have to do a full repeat to be sure.

I suppose that if that strand is at the back of your work, you could still lift it with the RH needle and sort of bring it to the front and then follow the rest of the Q1 instructions? Just a thought…

There have been quite a few reports of errors in that book. (Google “Vogue Stitchionary errata” and you’ll see what I mean.)

I checked the Vogue Knitting errata page and there’s nothing mentioned for your pattern, but it may not have been reported yet.

The site also has a contact page that lets you ask specific questions.

I agree with KnitQueen’s first post – if the “quilted” stitches are to appear on the front of the knitting, then the slipping should be done on the front.

It might be a good idea to look for the same pattern in another book (and probably under another name). A Treasury of Knitting Patterns (Barbara G. Walker) has a Mock Honeycomb stitch that is very much like yours, exxept that you slip 3 stitches instead of 5 (wyif!). Also look at the English Diamond Quilting Pattern in the same chapter.

I found this.

There was an episode on Knitty Gritty where they made something (a skirt?) with a stitch like this, called it a butterfly stitch. I just wrote the pattern down at the time, but it’s similar to what Ingrid posted. I think it would have to be wyif to create the quilted look.

ETA - Found the Knitty Gritty episode, with directions and pix, HERE. If you scroll all the way to the bottom, there’s a good pic on the left of a larger piece of fabric with the design very visible. It also has the slipping wyib, like VK. It worked when she did it, but I don’t get how the strands are in front if you’re slipping wyib. I’ll have to watch the episode again, airs next 12/5, 1130AM eastern time.
