Help with placing sts on holder and continuing to knit

Hi,

So my pattern is confusing me. It is for a hat, and you knit the right ear flap and then do the same for the left. However at the end of the first ear flap, it says place all sts on holder and then just says start over with the casting on and such for the other one. I don’t get how it is supposed to work. Do I cast on from the stitches on the holder somehow or cut the yarn off? It seems I need to cut the yarn but I got confused since it doesn’t say to. I suppose it’s inferred as the two ear flaps are separate and then joined back together later.

Welcome to KH! The yarn will need to be cut. As you say the two pieces are separate. For future reference it’s possible to knit two at a time. I like doing this because then I get two matching pieces without a lot of extra row counting and it’s easier to be sure they match up right.

Don’t forget to leave a good length tail when you cut the yarn so you can weave it in to secure it at the end.

Do you mean have two sets of needles or how would that work?

You mean how to knit two at a time? I’d start with a circular needle and two ends of yarn, if it’s long enough a straight needle works too. You knit one row, change yarn, then knit the row on the second piece, turn the work. When you realize you didn’t drop one yarn at the end of a row and your pieces are joined with a strand of yarn you tink back and fix it. That shouldn’t happen more than a few times, maybe never for you. I’m assuming your ear flaps are knit flat.
