Help with pinwheel dishcloth

http://patternsforputzes.blogspot.com/

I’m making this dishcloth and had no trouble doing the first three triangles. Right now, I’m on row two of the pattern, where I’m supposed to pick up a stitch from the first triangle, knit some stitches together and knit to the end of the row. My needle however is facing way away from the first triangle. In the picture, the first triangle is to the left and successive triangles were added counterclockwise.

How do I pick up stitches from the first triangle?

Instructions: (free pattern)

Pick up 21 stitches for the 4th and final triangle. Work 4th triangle as follows:

Row 1: (Wrong side) Sl 1, k to end of row (ridge).
Row 2: Pick up stitch on side of 1st triangle, p tog with first stitch, k2tog, k to end of row.
Row 3: Sl 1, work (p2tog, yo) to last 3 sts, p2, k1
Row 4: Repeat row 2.
Row 5: Repeat row 1 (ridge made).
Row 6: Repeat row 2.
Row 7: Sl 1, p to last st, k1.
Row 8: Repeat row 2.

It looks lik you’re right to do the first row below, then turn and do the 2nd row. Then follow the rest of the instructions.

Row 1: (Wrong side) Sl 1, k to end of row (ridge).
Row 2: Pick up stitch on side of 1st triangle, p tog with first stitch, k2tog, k to end of row.

I’ve already done “row 1”, though. I wonder if I need to knit the first row, from the outside in, so I end up in the center and not on the outside.

Could be you picked up the stitches the wrong direction, though you’d do that from where your yarn is at the end of triangle 3. Hmmm… Oh I know… Do it at the end of the row. It’s the only way I can think of to get it to come out right…

If you pick up your sts starting in the center, you’ll be in the right spot after row 1.

I thought of that, but the pattern leaves you with the yarn at the end of triangle 3 on the outside edge.
