Help with pattern

Hi everyone,

I’m new with knitting and discovered this amazing site to help me.

I have a few questions regarding the first pattern I’d like to realize.

1 - *k2tog, YO, repeat from * to end of round
I understand what k2tog means. I have a problem with YO. Yarn Over. The video shows it as Yarn Over then Knit 1. In my case, am I suppose to knit 2 stitches together, yarn over, then knit 2 stitches together again, yarn over and go on and on till end of the round? Or knit 2 stitches together, yarn over and knit 1 (as in the video), knit 2 stitches together, yarn over and knit 1, on and on till end of round?

2 - What does TURN means in a pattern? I have a section where it says Knit around to 7 stitches before Marker A, wrap next stitch and TURN. Purl across to 7 stitches before Marker B, wrap next stitch and TURN.

3 - what is a kfab? is it the same as k1 f&b or kfb?

  1. You are going to K2 tog, YO, K2 tog, YO, etc. DON’T K2 tog, YO, K1, K2 tog, YO, K1. The video just shows it that way so you see what to do after the YO.
  2. You’re doing short rows, here. So when you “turn”, you are going to turn back even though you haven’t finished the row. Let’s say you have 20 sts before Marker A, and it tells you to K13 (which would leave 7), wrap and turn. Even though you still have 7 sts left, you are going to turn the work over AS IF YOU HAD FINISHED THE ROW, and purl back. These are called short rows. They make the fabric curve, such as in the heel of a sock.
  3. I’ve not seen that one before. Is there a glossery in the pattern or book or magazine? If not, it sounds as if this is, as you guessed also, to knit in the front and back of the sts. This will increase by 1 st each time you do it. Does that make sense in the pattern? Do they give you a total st count at the end of that row, and does it add up to have increased like that?

I think ‘kfab’ is a non-standard abbreviation for kfb they just used all the letters of ‘knit front and back’.

Makes a lot more sense now.

Next question: is stockinette on regular needles the same as stockinette on circular needles? I have a few rounds of stockinette to do, but my project is using circular needles. I’m just curious and since we’re not really switching side on circular needles like we are on regular needles, maybe i thought I wouldn’t have to do 1 round of knit sts and 1 round of purl sts. Am I right?

If you are knitting one continuous circle around and around, then you just keep knitting (no purling). Think about it - you’re always looking at the stockinette side.

If you’re knitting something flat on circular needles, like a blanket, then you’d knit one row, purl one row.

Another question… what is the difference between knit around and knit across.
I need to do short rows and the pattern says:

Knit around 1 sts before marker A, wrap next stitch and turn
Purl across 1 sts before marker B, wrap next stitch and turn
Knit across 4 sts before marker A, wrap next stitch and turn
Purl across 4 sts before marker B, wrap next stitch and turn
Work stockinette for 6 rounds

Around is when you’re working in the round, and rows are rounds. Across is when you’re working flat and they’re rows.

This project is done on circular needle, 68 sts, marker A at the beginning and marker B after 34 sts, so half way.

I’m at the beginning of the round. I think I need to knit 67 sts then wrap and turn, right? that’s the first instruction?

They are just saying across instead of around because I don’t do a complete round? The way I do the knit or the purl sts are the same?

After the short rows are done, it says to work stockinette for 6 rounds. I’ll be sitting at 4 sts before marker B, which is at the middle of my round. Do I start counting rounds right away, or I finish my round with K sts and then start the 6 rounds of stockinette?

Sorry for all the noob questions, it’s my first project and I think I took one a little bit harder than it looked.

When they say knit around to the st before the marker, you’re knitting in the round. Then wrap that stitch and turn (just like at the end of a row knitting flat, which you will be for these short rows) and purl back across those sts till 1 before the other marker. Then turn again and knit, turn again and purl. Then turn again and you’re back to knitting in the round again for 6 rounds. Finish that round, then knit 6 more rounds, counting them at the beginning of round marker.

When you do short rows, are you suppose to have the same number of sts before and after the short rows.

I did a few samples to test it. I started with 20 sts.
Knit 5 before end of round, wrap and turn
Purl 5 before end of round, wrap and turn
Knit to end of round
Purl to end of round
I end up with 22 sts every time.
Am I doing something wrong or it’s normal?

My guess is that you’re picking up the extra stitches when you’re wrapping. It’s described as “wrap and turn”, but you actually are turning and THEN wrapping. But after wrapping, you should still have the same number of sts. Because if you have 20 sts, it would work out–

  1. K15, turn and wrap. You’re now looking at the back of your work and you should now have 5 sts on your right needle and 15 on your left.
  2. P10, turn and wrap. You’re now looking at the right side of your work and should now have 5 sts on your right needle and 15 on your left.
  3. K to end of row-- you should have knitted 15 sts, which would put all 20 sts on your right needle.
  4. P to end of row-- you just purled that as normal, on the 20 sts.
