Help with pattern, new

I knit with long needles and am starting my first mittens. The directions read as such:

Follow S1, K1 pattern to and including first P st; pattern across 8 sts of thumb, turn, cast on 1 st and P across (now 9) sts of thumb, turn, cast on 1 st (10 sts. in all).

I have pretty muc figured thiings out along the way but don’t understand the “pattern” part.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Welcome!

When directions say to ‘pattern’ they just mean to work in whatever stitch pattern you’ve been doing up to that point–stockinette, ribbing, lace, whatever.

Thanks ingrid!

So what does “turn” mean?

Normally, when you get to the end of a row, you ‘turn’ your work and go in the other direction, right? In this case, you’ll only be working the thumb stitches, so just turn your needles and work back the other way when the directions call for it, even though there are stitches left on the needles.
