Help with pattern instructions, please

I am knitting a sweater which requires a BC (back cross) and FC (front cross). The instructions call for me to slip 3 stitches onto cable needle and hold in back, K2, sl p st from cable needle onto left needle and purl and then k2 remaining stithces on cable needle. I am not sure if I am supposed to slip the first stitch on the cable needle ( the first stitch I slipped onto the cable needle) or the last stitch on the cable needle??? I think I should always use the first stitch but it is very awkward to get it onto the left needle. Any help will be appreciated! :??

Since it says slip p stitch from cable needle, you should use whichever stitch on the cable needle is purled. Or was that a typo?

All three stitches were slipped as if to purl onto the cable needle. The instructions don’t say this they only say to slip 3 stitches onto cable needle but I thought you always slip as if to purl.

Ok, I misunderstood. If you think it’s the first stitch (I don’t want to say since I don’t have it here in front of me) you could take the stitch off the cable needle with the right point and transfer it to the left. Would that work?

I think that would work. The way the pattern is written is “sl next 3 st onto cable needle and hold at front, k2, sl p st from cable needle onto left needle and p1, k2 from cable needle”. I am just not sure if I should slip the very first stitch or the last stich that I had slipped onto the cable needle. AM I making any sense?? I appreciate your help!

I think it’s supposed to be the first stitch nearest the point of the cable needle, so you get a purl stitch between the two sides of the cable. Is that what it’s supposed to look like?

Is there a link to the pattern? Or if it’s in a book, which one? I might have it.

It is in Zoe Mellor’s “Adorable Knits for Tots” and it is page 90. The chuncky cabled sweater. Fingers crossed.

I have her Animal Knits book.

I put some yarn on the needles and tried it.

Putting the first stitch nearest the point of the cable needle back on the left needle is silly because you might as well just purl it from the cable needle.

When I put the stitch furthest from the point on the cable needle back on the left needle, it felt very familiar. That’s what I would go with. It should work, but if it turns out wonky, I apologize.

Thank you so much for the help. I really appreciate it.
