I tried a pattern yesterday from Donna Kooler’s Encyclpedia of Knitting called “Horseshoes” and it says the pattern is a multiple of 10 stitches plus 1. I cast on 41 stitches (10x4+1) and got through the first repeat (10 rows). Then I started row 1 again and I’m short by like 4 stitches. I don’t know what I’ve done wrong. I tried it twice and both times it came out with less than 41 stitches. There are yo’s and slipping stitches and passing ones over, etc., but I really concentrated and followed the pattern exactly, or so I thought… :??
It’s likely that the mistake happened with the yarn overs, especially if you’re not used to doing lace knitting. How are you doing your yarn overs? Some get confused and think that a yarn over is a combination of bringing the yarn over the needle and knitting the next stitch. A yarn over is simply bringing the yarn over the right needle and immediately proceeding with the next instruction, whatever it might be.
If you’re doing the yarn overs properly, then the only thing I can think to suggest is start over and make sure you count your stitches following every row. If your stitch count is off, then at least you know which row the error is occurring on.
Also, some patterns don’t have the same stitch count on every row, they make up for it on following rows. What you could do is put a stitch marker between every pattern repeat and check to see that you’ve got the right number of stitches between each one.
Thank you both. So, I’m casting on the right amount of stitches, right? I’m not sure why I come up short. I’ll have to go and try again some other day. It has me frustrated right now.
I thought so! I just cannot figure out what the heck I’m doing wrong. All the rows up to row 11, which is the start of the second repeat for the pattern, came out fine, so it makes no sense to me.
