Help with pattern directions

Hello!

I hope you’ve all had a lovely Christmas season, and are back into the swing of knitting!

I’m here with a question about this pattern. I’m not sure you’ll be able to look at it since it is a purchased pattern, so I’ll attach a screen print of just the section that I’m confused on.

The first one is the Diamond Lace pattern that goes up the back, and the second is the actual pattern directions (in the red square). Would they mean that, every time I come to Row 7 in the Diamond Lace Pattern, I would do the increase? And what do they mean by “every 8th row 3 times”? :noway: I’m a little bewildered…

Any help would be appreciated!!

I couldn’t open your attachments so not sure about your specific row question.

Re: the every 8th row three times thing…
If you did X on row 1, you would repeat it on rows 9, 17 and 25.

If you look at the 5th photo down (white sweater) on the Rav page that you linked to, you can see the lace pattern on the back. The reverse stockinette panels flanking the center panel increase as you knit from hem to neck. That may well be the increase in row 7 of the Diamond Lace pattern repeats. If so, repeat the increase each time you knit row 7.

Thanks for your good knitting wishes. Your lacy cardigan is a great way to start off the new year.

I’m really sorry, but I think I’m still a little confused. Please bear with me!

I understand what you said, salmonmac, about increasing the reverse stockinette panel as I go up the back, but I’m not sure where to put those increases.

Here’s what the pattern says:

“Cont in patts (Diamond Lace Pattern) as established, and AT THE SAME TIME increasing 2 sts by working a p-inc into the outermost st within each Rev St st panel on the next 7th row, then every 8th row 3 times = 73 (77, 81, 85, 89) sts.”

Here’s the Diamond Lace Pattern:

“Diamond Lace
Worked over a multiple of 10 sts + 1.
Row 1 (WS and all other WS Rows): Purl.
Row 2: K2, *k2tog, [k1, yo] 2 times, k1, skp, k3; rep from *, ending last rep with k2.
Row 4: K1, *k2tog, k1, yo, k3, yo, k1, skp, k1; rep from *.
Row 6: K2tog, *k1, yo, k5, yo, k1, sl 1-k2tog-psso; rep from *, ending last rep with skp
instead of sl 1-k2tog-psso.
Row 8: K1, *yo, k1, skp, k3, k2tog, k1, yo, k1; rep from *.
Row 10: K2, *yo, k1, skp, k1, k2tog, k1, yo, k3; rep from *, ending last rep with k2.
Row 12: K3, *yo, k1, sl 1-k2tog-psso, k1, yo, k5; rep from *, ending last rep with k3.
Rep Rows 1-12 for pattern.”

So would I increase for the first time in the 7th row (meaning the row marked as #7 in the Diamond Lace Pattern), and after that, increase every row marked as #8 of the Lace Pattern, and do that last part three times, until I have the right number of stitches??

For me this is simplest to do if I keep separate track of the Lace pattern which is a 12 row repeat and the increase in the rev-stockinette panels.

From this point in the pattern (that is the “Cont in patts”), you continue the lace pattern. It doesn’t matter which row you’re on, continue with the lace pattern. Also from this point, start counting rows for the increase and when you get to the 7th row, put the increase into the outermost st of the rev- st st section on each side. This isn’t likely to be row 7 of the lace pattern.
Now you’re going to continue with the lace pattern as you have been and also continue to count rows separately for the increase. The first increase was on increase row 7 so the next are on rows 15, 23, and 31.

It’s no problem to write this differently if it still doesn’t make sense. Just ask again.

Oh…OK, that makes sense now!! (Finally, right?) :teehee:

So I will have to keep track of my rows, work seven rows, but not go by “row 7” and “row 8” of the Lace Pattern. I get it now. Thank you so much! I appreciate your help!

KnittinGal, you’ve got it. Remember, you always have friends here. Come back if you run into problems and post a phote when you finish if you’d like.
