help with needles and yarn size.

hey guys :grinning:

I have a question about my yarn size and needles. This is what my pattern says:

Yarn – 2 balls of worsted weight yarn, preferably superwash
Needles – two sets of double pointed needles, 2.5 mm + 3 mm

does any of you think this is right? I mean the thickness of the yarn and the needle size. I´ve never worked with this yarn size and needle size.

the pattern is modified ww11 army gloves.

Thank you!

It sounds like a very dense and firm fabric having the smaller needles with the heavier yarn but I would imagine army glove would want to be quite dense and firm, often work-wear is not designed for comfort but for practicality and a dense fabric would be warmer, more protective and likely harder wearing. Fishermen’s sweaters for instance used to be made with coarser yarn and on small needles for a tightky knit, robust fabric, no one really wants that in their everyday fashion clothes so these sweater designs are often modernised now to be soft and have more drape.
Depending what you hope to achieve by working the design you might want to switch to a lighter yarn.

Probably working a good size swatch and washing it to see how the fabric feels would help you decide if this is what you want.

I agree about the firmness of the knit fabric.
Would you give us the details on pattern and yarn? What is the name of your pattern and designer, and what is the name of the yarn?

Is this your pattern.

There’s also confirmation on this ravelry link that the yarn and needle size is correct.

I’ve knitted Opal sock yarn worsted weight on US 3/3.25 mm needles. That was as small a needle as I was willing to use. Any smaller would have killed my hands. Other worsted weight yarns I’ve done on US5/3.75 needles for house socks or slippers. BTW the Opal socks wear like iron but they are not soft and cuddly.

thank you, I know what to do now!
