Help with Neck Instructions

Thanks for accepting me into the group.
I am really stuck with this pattern. It is the first time Ive tried to knit a sweater.

I have completely the back but the front is very challenging

Back; rib 2 inches and continue in stocking st till work measures 28 “ ending with purl row.

Shoulders: Cast off 38 sts beg next 2 rows. Leave rem 39 sts on st holder. I have done this.

Front: Work as for back till work from beginning measures 25” ending with purl row.

Shape neck: next row knit 48”. Turn. Leave rem sts on a spare needle.

Dec 1 st at neck edge on next 4 rows, then every follow allt row to 38 sts.

Cont even until work measures same length as back to shoulder ending with a purl row. Cast off.

With RS side of work facing slip next 19 sts from spare needle onto a st holder. Join yarn to rem sts and work as given for left side reversing shaping.

Please help me understand how to work the neck shaping. I dont understand what to do.

Thanks everyone

What is the name of your pattern and designer?
These instructions have you work one shoulder up to the bind off, put the center neck sts on hold and then work the second shoulder. The only decreases are at the neck edge.
With the right side (RS or public side of the knitting) facing, knit across 48sts and turn as you would at the end of a row. Leave the remaining sts on the left needle unworked or place them on a holder. You’ll get to them later.
Decrease one stitch at the beginning of the row, a wrong side row (WS), call it row 1 and work to the end of row (the armhole edge). Now decrease at the end of row 2, the beginning of row 3 and the end of row 4. All the decreases are at the neck edge.
Next decrease at the neck edge on rows 6,8,10,12,14 and 16. That should take you to 38sts. Follow the directions to continue knitting until the front shoulder is the same length as the back to the shoulder.
The center 19sts go on a holder and similar decrease directions are followed for the second shoulder with all the decreases at the neck edge.
Come back if this isn’t clear or you have any questions. Have fun finishing up!

Hi Mac

Thanks for your reply and advice. The pattern is called A Knit Mens Sweater and I got it off a website called FaveCrafts.com

Good looking sweater. See how it goes and let us know if there’s still a question. We also love to see photos of finished projects.

Thank you Helen. I will certainly try this. Much appreciated.

The neck shaping means you split the front into two shoulders.

  • When the front measures 25", knit 48 stitches, then turn your work. Leave the remaining stitches on a spare needle.
  • Work only these 48 stitches for one shoulder.
  • Decrease 1 stitch at the neck edge for the next 4 rows, then every alternate row until you have 38 stitches left.
  • Continue straight until it matches the back length, then cast off.
  • Go back to the held stitches, place the middle 19 stitches on a holder for the neck opening, join yarn, and work the other shoulder in reverse.

You are basically shaping one side of the neckline at a time.

Thank you! I am attempting this and will certainly take photos of the finished product. It may look rather different from what it should - lol!!!

I’m betting you get it exactly right.
Sometimes it’s easier to work both shoulders at the same time using two balls of yarn. On the first row, instead of turning continue by placing the center sts on hold and with the second ball of yarn, shape the second shoulder.
You may want to do one shoulder at a time and that’s just fine too.
