# Help with my brim on my cabled chapeau

I am making the brim on my stitch and nation hat and do not understand the brim. It states to cast on 40
Row 1 knit 25
Row 2 slip 1 purl 12 turn
Row 3 Sip 1 knit 15 turn
Row 4 slip 1 purl 18 turn
Then it states to continue in this manner working 3 more sts [/COLOR]at the center each time until all 40 sts have been worked

Then you work 6 rows even

and then decrease the 40 stitches.

I do not know what working 3 more st at the center means can anyone help me?

Thank you.

You’re working short rows to make the brim. It seems that there should be a direction to turn after you knit the 25sts in row 1. The extra 15sts on the left hand needle will stay where they are as you purl 12 in row 2. The extra sts on both sides will then be incorporated into the working sts, 3 at a time on each row until you’ve added them all into the worked sts on the needles.
Here’s a video on short rows that may help.

I am going to follow this when I get home from work thank you so much.

Yes - see how the number you’re working is going up by three each time - purl 12, knit 15, purl 18 - you just keep going up by three until you hit the row where you work 40. So the next row is going to be knit 21, then purl 24, etc.

(Which isn’t divisible by three, so it might actually be the row of 39 and then you just work the last stitch as well.)

I have been knitting for a long time and I have made this hat before. I am so stuck. I am really confused - so it start out
Row 1 knit 25
Row 2 slip 1 purl 12 turn
Row 3 Sip 1 knit 15 turn
Row 4 slip 1 purl 18 turn

Do I also increase the first row or just the center stitches where it states increase by three in the center stitches so it would be
k 25
Row 2 slip 1 purl 15 turn
Row 3 Sip 1 knit 18 turn
Row 4 slip 1 purl 21 turn?

I really appreciate the help my knitting group dismantled.
