Help with Morehouse Stretch School Bus Scarf?

I am having a little trouble reconciling this pattern in my head. I think there may be a mistake. If there is, that’s fine, I can adjust it myself to make it work. I’m just more worried that if it makes sense to all of you, then there is something I am missing.

I bought this knit kit about 6 years ago. They still sell the pattern, so please visit https://www.morehousefarm.com/product/schoolbus-scarf/ to purchase if you are interested in making it. I couldn’t mask much of the pattern and still explain my difficulty to you.

So, I started with 168 stitches and knit for 25 rows. Then, you’re supposed to decrease 1 and bind off 5 (down to 162 now). Then, you go up (and then back down) between the windows, without really changing the stitch count. The “bind off 3, knit 5” pattern doesn’t leave me with 8 stitches at the end. (I haven’t actually tried it, I’m just trying to make sense of it before I start). Likewise, going back over the top of the windows (knit 8, then repeat the cast on 3, knit 5 pattern does not leave me with the 5 stitches at the top of the windshield section (should be 157, after 11 decreases over the hood and windshield, right?) I submitted a question to the designer, but haven’t heard back yet. If I am correct in thinking there might be a mistake here, I guess I’ll have to modify the pattern a little to make it work.

That’s such a clever scarf.
You work the hood and end with 162sts. There are then 10sts for the windshield leaving you with 152sts for the following windows. The windows and areas between windows use 8sts each. (The illustration shows 5sts between the windows so that must include the one stitch remaining on the right needle after the bind off of 3sts.)

The problem I have is that you end the repeats having bound off 3 then knit 5sts. There are 8sts left over. It seems to me that you should bind off the next 3sts for a window and work the last 5sts for the back of the bus. Then the directions for casting on over the top of the next window make sense.

Yes, making the back of the bus 5 stitches, not 8, I think, will work out. Thanks for taking a look.
