Help with modifying "Nakiska" headband

I would like to make the “Nakiska” headband, if I have time, as part of my mom’s birthday present…

I have several changes to it, though, and I was wondering if someone could help me figure out if the changes are OK?

First of all, I want to use cotton yarn so that it will be machine washable… this will be more of a headband that she will use while washing her face or just pulling her hair back if it’s sweaty, not keeping her ears warm.

Would I need to modify the pattern to use cotton? The gauge is similar, but I’m thinking maybe the cotton won’t stretch as much, and maybe won’t fit her head (she has a big head, like me).

Also, the pattern calls for a 12" US5 circular needle… I have a US5, but it’s around 16" long. Will that be OK? I have never used circular needles before, but since the finished circumference is will be, like, 20", that will be OK right?

Also, the pattern calls for working rows 1-8 of the chart two times (it’s a cabled pattern). Since I don’t need this to be very wide (since it’s not an earwarmer), I was thinking I would just do one repeat. Would that work OK?

If anyone has time to helpe me, I’d really appreciate it! I want to make sure this will all work before I start it. I’m running out of time before her birthday and there’s several little things I want to make. I think that headband is beautiful!

One thing I’ve heard of doing for headbands or hems of hats is to tack a thin elastic thread or band to the inside, especially when working with cottons. That way you can make it a smidge larger, but the elastic will gather it in a bit but still allow it to stretch.
