Help with mitten pattern

This isn’t my first time knitting mittens, but I’m confuzzled by this pattern. Everything was going along fine until I got to the 2nd round of the shape thumb gusset section. I do have the 44 stitches at that point as the pattern says I should. But when I finish 1st round and move on to 2nd round and K1, I still have quite a few more stitches before the marker. I can’t figure it out! If anyone can help me, I’ll be so grateful. Thank you. https://www.yarnspirations.com/red-heart-spiral-up-knit-mittens/RHK0115-027876M.html?cgid=patterns#prefn1=brand&prefv1=Red+Heart&prefn2=yarnProductLine&prefv2=Heat+Wave+Prints&start=3 Shape Thumb Gusset: 1st rnd:
K1. Move marker for new beg of
rnd. (K3. Sl3Pwyf) 3 times. K1. PM.
(Kfb) twice. PM. (Sl3Pwyf. K3) twice.
Sl3Pwyf. 44 sts.
2nd rnd: K1. Move marker. (K3.
Sl3Pwyf) 3 times. Slm. K4. Slm. K1.
(Sl3Pwyf. K3) twice. Sl3Pwy

It looks to me like there is an error in the pattern. It should be a repeat of 3 times instead of twice after the thumb gusset.
Shape Thumb Gusset: 1st rnd: K1. Move marker for new beg of rnd. (K3. Sl3Pwyf) 3 times. K1. PM. (Kfb) twice. PM. (Sl3Pwyf. K3) 3 times. Sl3Pwyf.

Here’s a picture to show anyone who’s interested how the mitten is coming along so far. I like the spiral effect. Thank you again Salmonmac for helping me, because I was ready to give up on this pattern and I really didn’t want to because I thought it would be so cool.
