Hello, I am hoping you kind souls can help me, again, please!
I am working on a girl’s cardigan witbh a lace pattern and am having a problem with gettting the number of stitches correct.
I am working the 3rd size and have worked to the place hihlighted on the pattern belo; working on the next area of the pattern after the first 20 rows of lace patterning. I have worked the first four rows, but am having a problem with the fifth, as I can’t seem to get the correct number of stitches, which should be 75 on xcompleter of this row. It says to decrease 1 stitch at each end, whiich Row 5 would do anyway. But, should I be taking into account the fact that I am now working on 77 stiches now and knit fewer than 5 stitches after the K2tog? I have tried various ways, but always end up with the wrong number of stitches at the end of the row. I am now confusing myself😕 I usually have markers to show where each section of pattern starts/ends, and count that way, but haven’t found it easy to do on this one.
Any thoughts would be very welcome, please.
The pattern should have a decrease at each end of the 5th row. The increases and decreases in the repeats balance each other out. So those two decreases should take you from 77 to 75sts. It may be that missing or extra sts are in the pattern repeats? You can put markers between repeats and name the sts just to check.
Yes, you will have to account for the fact that you aren’t starting with 81sts before the 5th row. You have 77sts. One way to account for this is to look to the pattern in previous rows.
You want the pattern to align with the previous rows. Because of the offset, each lace motif aligns with a repeat 2 below. Keep that alignment in mind as you work the 5 rows after row 20. It looks like you’ll work K2tog, k4 before the repeat to start the 5th row. Check that that keeps the pattern correct withou a jog.
Thank you, Salmonac. I thought K4 after K2tog was right, but the more I looked at it, the more confused I got! I could blame the current heat wave here in the UK for my fuzzy brain😂
I will try again!
The heat has a lot to account for. Check for the alignment and you should be fine. There are always the ever helpful lifelines too.
It’s an adorable sweater and you’re on your way!
