Help with knitting Shell Top by Marianne Isager

Hello!

I am knitting the top ITR and am at the point where each breast section needs to knitted separately flat knitting. I assume I need to leave the live thread with the back section and come to it later. I am not clear when exactly to add extra stitches for the armpit and actually which breast section to start first: the right or left? The instructions are:

In the circular knitting version, divide the work

at the sides between the Back and Front (the

Front has two more stitches in the center purl

rib). Three new stitches will be added at each

side of the Front. Use an e-loop cast on to add

the first group of new stitches at the end of

the WS row before separating the Front and

Back.

Each breast section is worked separately and

shaping is provided by decreasing stitches at

each side of the center stitch as done in the

swatch as follows: Mark the center stitch in

both breast portions and work k2tog decre-

ase before the marked stitch and K2 twisted

tog decrease after the marked stitch. Knit

across to the center Front 5 purl stitches, K2

and increase one stitch using the e-loop cast

on. There are now 3 purl stitches remaining

before the second breast section on the other

side of the Front. The center Front stitches will

be worked in garter stitch; 3 stitches for each

half of the Front. Turn the work and continue

the completion of the first breast section by

working the 3 edge stitches in garter stitch

and continuing the decreases at the center of

the breast section.

Welcome to the forum!

The pattern is a bit confusing on the addition of sts at each side but it sounds like there may be directions for knitting the body flat as well as in the round. Start with the left side (left as you would wear the top). It looks like your yarn strand is there now. Add the three sts (unless you have already added them?) then start knitting across to the center sts. Follow the directions there to k2, then increase one stitch and turn. Each side will be worked separately starting with the left breast.

The lower blue arrow pointing left is the direction of knitting, the i represents the increase at the center and the curved blue arrow is the turn to work back.
Your knitting looks lovely!
