Help with knitting pattern

Hi, all, I am new to the board, and have a question:
The pattern states "cast on 3 sts"
then the next row, row 1 is (WS): p1, (p1, yo, p1) in next st, p1.
How do I do this? I assume I have to increase from the 3 sts but where?
Row 2 instructions are: kn2, (k1,yo,k1)in next st, kn2 -again, I am confused exactly what this means…
The second question is since I’m using circular needles, should I just knit rather than purl and ignore the WS instruction to purl?
many thanks.:muah: :knitting:

You’re going to knit flat, sounds like it’s a shawl; the circ is just to hold a lot of stitches, so do the rows as written.

You increase in the second st on Row 1. P1, then in the next st purl, but don’t slip it off the needle, wrap your yarn for the YO, then purl again. Then purl the 3rd st.

Row 2 is similar - k2, then do k1, yo, k1 in the 3rd st, and knit the last 2 sts.

To do the increase, you’ll knit into the stitch, but don’t slide it off the needle. Bring the yarn to the front between the needles and then knit into the same stitch again before sliding it off. You will have 3 where you had one.

For the increase on the purl side, you’ll purl into the stitch and don’t slide it off. The bring the yarn to the front between the needles and back over the right tip to the front again and then purl the same stitch and slide it off.

If you’re working in the round, then you have to reverse the stitches on the wrong side rows from purls to knits and vice versa, and also reverse the order in which you knit them.

thanks so much to both of you! you’re up late!

Not me - it’s only 10:30 where I am. But I’m about to stop for the night.
