Help with Hjem Baby Pattern

Hello!

I’m new here and looking for help with part of a baby knitting pattern that I can’t seem to figure out. Any help would be very much appreciated!

I am knitting a pattern called ‘Hjem’. Here is the link on ravelry:

I’ve knit the lovely little sweater but am having trouble understanding how to proceed with the tights.

I have knit down to the bottom of the tights but don’t understand the part where you go on to knit the feet. I am making the smallest size of the pattern.

Copied below is the part of the pattern I don’t understand. Just wondering if anyone could help me understand how to proceed with this. If I’m knitting over 16 stitches for the heel over 12 rows of stockinette, I end up with only 4 stitches left and then not sure how to proceed with the rest of the instructions. I have not knit socks before (I assume these are similar to a sock pattern), so I’m quite confused! I can copy more of the pattern if that helps too. I’m really puzzling over this so any help and clarification would be very much appreciated!!

Pattern:

Regulate the amount of sts to (32) 32 (36) 40 sts (for the 3 smallest sizes). Start at the centre back and divide all sts on 4 double pointed needles with (8) 8 (9) 10 sts per needle. Let the sts from needle 2 and 3 rest. Knit the heel over all sts from needle 1 and 4 = (16) 16 (18) 20 sts. Knit (12) 12 (14) 14 rows of stockinette stitch back and forth (1st row from RS). The 1st st of every row is to be decreased (k on RS, p on WS). Work the decreases as follows:

1st row (RS): k (10) 10 (12) 14, ssk, k1. Turn work.
2nd row: Slip 1 st purlwise, p (5) 5 (7) 9, p2tog, p1. Turn work.
3rd row: slip 1 st knitwise, k (6) 6 (8) 10, ssk, k1. Turn work.
4th row: slip 1 st purlwise, p (7) 7 (9) 11, p2tog, p1. Turn work.
5th row: slip 1 st knitwise, k (8) 8 (10) 12, ssk. Turn work.
6th row: slip 1 st purlwise, p (8) 8 (10) 12, p2tog. Turn work.
K (5) 5 (6) 7 sts = centre back at the heel. Knit the gusset on both sides of the heel:
1st heel-round: k (5) 5 (6) 7, knit up (7) 7 (8) 8 sts on the heel’s one side, k over the remaining (16) 16 (18) 20 sts, knit up (7) 7 (8) 8 sts on the heel’s other side, k (5) 5 (6) 7 (= centre back at the heel). In total (40) 40 (46) 50 sts this round. Begin at centre back and divide the sts as follows: 1st needle = (12) 12 (14) 15 sts, 2nd and 3rd needle = (8) 8 (9) 10 sts, 4th needle = (12) 12 (14) 15 sts.
2nd heel-round: knit until 2 sts are left on the 1st needle, k2tog, knit sts on 2nd and 3rd needle, ssk, knit sts on 4th needle = 2 sts decreased.
3rd heel-round: knit all sts.

Welcome to the forum!
That’s a very sweet pattern. I’ve added it to my favorites.
I would ignore these instructions: “Knit (12) 12 (14) 14 rows of stockinette stitch back and forth (1st row from RS). The 1st st of every row is to be decreased (k on RS, p on WS). "
Go from the instruction to “Knit the heel over all sts from needle 1 and 4 = 16 sts.” directly to " Work the decreases as follows:”
That will take the 16sts to 10sts and then on to the gusset. You’ll have to take out the 12 rows that you just worked back to the original 16sts.

Thank you so very much for your reply and help! I will try your suggestion–it seems to make sense with omitting the part with the 12 rows of stockinette with decreases. I have really puzzled over this so glad to have some guidance

It is a sweet pattern, isn’t it! Thanks again!
