Hello to everyone. I am new to following an actual knitting pattern except for the dishcloth in my how to booklet. It had repeats within repeats that I had to finally sit and right out my own numbers for and finally finished it beautifully :cheering: But now for 3 days I have been attempting another pattern for a simple headband, I thought, and just can not figure it out. Is it me or the knitting patterns? In crochet each row is written out it seems. Then in this pattern it sounded so simple…
Cast on 19
Row 1- k1k2,p1. Repeat 5x. Finish row with k2 k1
Row 2-(ws) k1p2k1. Repeat 5x. Finish with P2 k1
Then the big deal…
when piece measures 8cm inc all p1 to p2=24sts.
And this went fine and had all my stitches. But then noticed the pattern was not looking like the picture soooo I ripped it. And this continued to happen no matter what until I decided to also inc the k1 repeats to k2 as each 1st and last st is k1. It was ribbing so pretty but did have a noticeable break somehow in the pattern where I had increased. Anyway it was ok looking. But then…
When piece measures 14 cm increase all p2 to p3=29 sts. Did that. And it is just not looking like the picture.
Any ideas??? Look at it…sooooooooo very beautiful!
I love the headband, but hate the Garnstudio patterns, they are DIFFICULT! Also in norwegian.
I have knitted lots of this headband, but it is difficult to tell in english.
Try and read this page, another pattern, but the same result!
That is sweet. Thanks for your idea. Its soooo pretty too! I am looking at a document now about the pattern for the panta. I do wonder what is up with the garnstudio patterns being so difficult to translate. Its a shame because they are so pretty.
Thank You!
The Garnstudiopatterns are awful in Norwegian, I promise! And I think that they are getting even worse when they are translated!
I am knitting my third panta now, the pattern is easy when you understand it, please dont give up!
Just looking at it quickly here…the knit stitches of the rib doesn’t change at all, you only make the purl sections wider at intervals as you go, and then decrease as you work back down. Looking at the picture, the side that is the right side is the side that has the K2 part of the ribs showing and you can see that the purl ribs get wider as it goes to the top and then narrower down the sides. What about yours isn’t looking like the picture? Could it be that you’re looking at the wrong side of your work rather than the right side?
Let me just say too, though, that I tried one of the garnstudio patterns this summer and had nothing but trouble with it - it left A LOT to interpretation so if there truly is a problem with this pattern, I wouldn’t be surprised!!
Well after working this thing again and again and again…the stitches were just not making any sort of pattern at all. it looked like assorted stitches in a random pattern. Maybe I screwed up I don’t know. But in the meantime I am following the “panta” pattern above and it is looking sharp. I just don’t know if it will be as wide as the 86 10 Garnstudio pattern. But at least its working. In the meantime I have signed up for the garnstudio forum but have difficulty signing in and hope to get some good explanation about the pattern from them. I adore the headband pattern and want one for me and my daughter whom has a huge messy bun of hair that a hat cannot fit over.
I would lik to ask which method of increase is used in the panta pattern??? Mine seems to be slightly detectable…and I would like it how it should be.
Thanks to all. Happy knitting!
Maybe this is a silly question, but are you repeating everything in the row instructions, or just what it in between the …??? Was it looking like a ribbed pattern should look?
In working the headband I repeated the whole rows as written which would then include the repeats between the **. And then it has you always finish the row1 with k2k1 and row 2 with p2k1 which I did this also. The initial part of the piece worked up great but once I did the increases it started to look terrible. So increasing the p1 to p2 when the piece was 8cm at first looked terrible so then I also increased the k1 to k2 and that section looked good-24sts. But then when I got to the 14cm mark and increased p2 to p3 another mess and just could not figure it out. I would sooo love if it could just be written row by row or something. How awesome that would be.
I really want to help you figure this out, I wish I was a headband-type person because I love how this looks!
You’ve got the first part figured out with the rows 1&2 directions. Once you get to the 8cm point you are going to increase each purl section by 1 on a right side row. So it’s going to look like this:
K1 *k2, pfb (purl into front and back of stitch to increase by 1); repeat from * 5 times, end row with K2, K1
This will change what your row 2 instruction look like from now until the next purl increase at 14cm. So until the 14cm mark, your wrong side rows will be:
K1 *P2, K2; repeat from * 5 times, end row with P2, K1
And until the 14cm mark, your right side rows will be:
K1 *K2, P2; repeat from * 5 times, end row with K2, K1
At the 14cm mark, on a RS row you will:
K1 *K2, P1, pfb (again, to increase your purls by 1); repeat from * 5 times, end row with K2, K1
The wrong side rows until the 18cm mark will be:
K1 *P2, K3; repeat from * 5 times, end row with P2, K1
And the right side rows until the 18cm mark will be:
K1 *K2, P3; repeat from * 5 times, end row with K2, K1
You’ll continue on in this way, as per the instructions, increasing the purl sections by 1 until you get to the top of the headband. And in between you will simply be knitting the knits and purling the purls, as they face you.
Does this help??
knitqueen…wow! Thanks a bunch-- as this is working out so sweet. I had to start fresh again as I had ripped it and started a panta pattern. But I am close to the 14 cm mark and its beautiful. You are very kind to take time to help…I adore your knowledge. Now I am hoping on the way down I do this thing correctly. I know one thing I was doing wrong was doing inc on the first p when there were more than p1. So I am thankful to you for writting it out for me. The pfb has made the inc nearly undetectable. And showing me how to then work the rows helped me too. Now when I get to the dec will I always dec on the last purls Ex.
k1 *k2 p1 p2tog??? Thank you knitqueen
You’re welcome! I don’t know if it matters so much which purl stitch you increase or decrease on, as long as you are only inc/dec by 1 stitch per section and you incorporate that into your rib from then on. If you run into problems on the decrease section, let me know.
I had posted the other day but I guess it did not show up. My fault. Anyway the headband turned out beautiful and all thanks to this website. I had no issues with the decreses. I love the headband its very modern looking and hard to keep it off now. Hope to find another pattern soon that will intrique me.
