Hi everyone. I’m back to knitting, and I am making my brother a hat. I have all the hat figured out, except with the decreases (I’m knitting it in the round, from the bottom to top).
The hat’s made up of 144 stitches (Gauge: 6sts/8rows=1 inch). I plan to begin the decreases when the hat measures 5 inches. I’ll do 8 k2tog, knit one row, 8 k2tog, knit one row, etc., until less than 30 stitches remain.
Are these decreases fine? If not, can anyone suggest another way to make them? (I want the hat to be as much seamless as possible…)
No, no, I don’t mean K8, K2toguntil end of row.
I mean I’ll do something like:
Row 1: K16, K2tog until end of row
Row 2: K15, K2tog until end of row
And then keep on going down. (I’d do 8 decreases per row)
You see, I did another hat with decreases like you say, and the top of the hat ended up all stretched, squared and weird. Would this be alright?
Actually, what you just said is the same thing Ingrid was trying to say - she just didn’t write it all out (but I understood it!!)
What she is saying also, is that if you were to start with k8, k2tog it doesn’t come out even with the number of stitches you are starting with. Neither will what you are saying. The best option to get an even decrease all around is to do as Ingrid said - k10, k2tog because it will give you 12 decreases evenly around - 12 decreases x 12 stitches equals 144. Then the next decrease row would be k9, k2tog. It will give you a kind of swirl on the top so if that isn’t the look you’re going for you would have to try a different decrease. Every other row should be a non-decrease row, by the way, like you stated in your original post.
What you could do is go on ravelry (are you a member?) and look at hat patterns there - there are lots of free ones - and look at the decreases used in different styles of hats.
