I just knitted a beanie, and it decreased quickly at the end (k3, k2tog - k2, k2tog, etc.) and so it’s all bunched up, which looks okay, but I really want to figure out how to make my next hat look like this one in the attached photo. Can anyone read this pattern and figure out what is going on? The hat doesn’t get cone-shaped/narrow at the end, even though it obviously decreases for awhile… I’m a newbie knitter, can anyone help/explain this to me? Thanks!
The decrease portion looks to be something like this…
(K2, SSK, K12, k2tog) repeat four times total.
Then on subsequent rows the K11 would decrease by two because of the prior decreases.
(K2, SSK, K10, K2tog) repeat four times in total.
Continue in this manner till the final row where you’ll have only 2sts (which you will SSK (or K2tog if you prefer)) within each section.
(K2, SSK) repeat four times in total.
12 sts remain. Cut yarn. Pull end through remaining sts. Cinch up and weave in end.
We need the pattern name and link to look through it.
I can tell you though that you usually need to have a plain knit row between decrease rows to create a rounded top rather than bunched up. I usually wait till I’m down to the last couple rows to do two decrease rows in a row. I rarely knit that type of decrease though so it would be helpful to see the pattern.
This hat comes out like that
If I recall, the decreases worked by dividing the total amount of stitches by 4 and placing 4 markers. Then the decreases went ssk AFTER a marker, and K2 together BEFORE each marker.
Oh sorry, I don’t have the pattern - I meant to ask if anyone could figure out approximately what the pattern in the photo is just by looking at the hat. And I will do a knit row between decreases this time, thanks!
See the hole at the top? These are not decreases, they’re increases. The hat is knit from the top down. Here’s an instructional video that is similar.
