Help with Fetching - cable issues

Hi,

I know the Fetching mitts on Knitty are popular so I thought I’d give them a shot, having neither made glovers nor anything with cables before. I’m running into a few issues and since many of you have experience with this pattern or similar, it thought you might be able to offer some advice:

  1. Cables just look a bit messy - I’m doing exactly what the directions say to do, but for some reason I’m not getting the definition in the cables that I was hoping for. I don’t know if this will change when I wear them, but right now it just looks sort of lumpy. Any advice?

  2. space between dpns - this seems large to me. Any way I can shorten it? Maybe I’m knitting too loosely between needles?

  3. should I just scrap in and start over or forge ahead hoping for the best?

I’m using louisa harding kashmir aran yarn for reference.

Thanks in advance!

Are you getting guage? It sounds like your stitches are too big on the needles.

as for the extra space between the needles, I always sort of tug it a bit tighter on the first 2 stitches on the new needle to help.

Maybe it would help if you could post a picture of what is happening with your cables. Lumpy? Hmmm?

I’m probably not getting the right guage. I wouldn’t be a bit surprised at that.

I’ll see if I can snag a camera or my phone and take a picture tomorrow. I went through and finished the first one, and it’s not as bad as I thought when I put it on. But it’s still not as nice as I’d like. I’ll try to get a picture to share.

When I am knitting cables, I always give a little tug down on them
after doing a crossing and it seems to help kinda stretch the stitches
a bit smoother since they do get all bunched up and weird looking
when you first do the cross. Because of all the manipulation
involved I think cables always look a bit weird right when you do
them but if you look at the ones further down the knitting that have
"settled" I think you’ll find they look much better.

I actually finished these today. The right hand turned out better than the left, so I think my issues that I was having I think are just inexpreince with DPNs and cables.

i was able to take some pictures with my icky cell phone… hopefully it’s enough to show you my lumpy cables…

Libbie,
you are so right! That is exactly how these feel. I did as you suggested on my second half of the pair and I think my cables turned out better. Thank you so much. I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one who has issues with the funky looking cables. Odd that they have to “settle”…

Thanks!
