Help with different guage and using trim on a cardigan

Oh if you could help me with this I will be eternally grateful :muah:

I am making this sweater: http://www.knittingpureandsimple.com/babycardi.html

I am wanting to use a worsted yarn, Cestari in place of DK weight. It calls for 5 spi and I am getting 4.25spi when I do my guage swatch. How do I adjust all my numbers? I am wanting to do the 6 month size, if it is a tad smaller (like 3ish months) that would be fine as well  I have never messed w/ subing yarns or any of that so please explain it to me like a 2 year old

Also I am going to do the garter stitching in a different colored yarn. It is knit flat so what do I do at the beginning and end of the rows where the garter stitching is? Do I carry my yarn and what is the best way to prevent gaps??

Thanks so much and sorry for so many questions for only my second post.

Right now, if you follow the pattern as written, you’ll just end up with a bigger sweater. If you really want it smaller, you’ll notice that the pattern increases in increments of 4 stitches. You could reduce your stitch count by a multiple of 4 to keep things in proportion. But considering how fast babies grow, you could just use your yarn and let the baby grow into it.

As for the garter edges, you’ll use a separate strand for each edge. Work the 4 stitches with the contrasting color and then hold that yarn over to the left and knit with the main color so it comes up from under the CC. Check out Amy’s video on intarsia to get a visual of how to avoid gaps.

Another option would be to leave those garter stitches out and pick up stitches along the edge in your CC to create the edging. It won’t look exactly the same, but you could do ribbing or seed stitch or garter stitch. Your choice.

The problem with making a smaller sweater is that babies grow really fast. My new GD at 6 weeks was about to outgrow the 3 mo size (she’s a bit on the bigger size for babies), and had tons of cute clothes given to her that she probably wasn’t able to wear. You should go up at least one needle size, maybe 2, to see if you can get 5 st/inch and make it the 6 mo size. Or use heavier yarn. I made a sweater for her loosely based on that pattern and used heavier yarn and larger needles so it’s probably closer to a 9-12 mo size (especially since I made the sleeves longer) and she will probably be able to wear it this fall and next spring too.

Thanks! It is a gift for a mom that always has foster babies so it will be well loved by many adorable small babies  She doesn’t have that many older babies so I need to do a smaller size. I think I’m going to leave off the stitches and pick them up, I did that on another sweater and hadn’t thought of that, thanks!
I would go down in needle size, but I heard that Cestari is hard to knit with on smaller needles. I think I found a site where I adjust the size, I just need to remember to do it in increaments of 4
Thanks so much everyone!
