I have 72 stitches on my needles and the instructions are:
Work decreases and establish pattern as follows. Begin k2p2, purling 2 sts tog 28 times evenly spaced.
Since I am mathmatically challenged, how do I figure it out.

Math. 72-28=56 sts after you’re done. Interestingly, 28 is half of 56, and 1/3 of 72, so you need to dec after every 2 sts or on every 3rd st. k2, p2tog, k2, p2tog, etc…
Would it also be correct to divide 72 by 28 to find out how many stitches to do between decreases? So far, that’s what I’ve been doing, but if I should be doing something else I should change now before something big gets screwed up (!)
Sure, that’s 3, which works out to every 3rd st. I think. Sometimes you’ve just got to try out something and if it doesn’t look like it’s working, start over.
Actually, 72-28 is 44, and 28 is 1/3 of 84.
If you decrease every 3rd stitch, you will wind up with 48 stitches, so you need to fit in another 4 decreases somewhere. You could try doing something like decreasing every other stitch 3x, then every 3rd 3x, then every other 3x, etc. Don’t know how that would work with your pattern, but it would get you down to 44 stitches and be balanced out fairly well.
My calculator lied! :pout:
Thanks for the help. It would have been nice if 72-28=56! I just kind of winged it. I have 48 stitches instead of 44, but I think it might have been too snug at 44 sts anyway. I’m going to try it on tonight before I go any further. I put in a life line just in case!
To complicated the equation, I had to work in k2p2 rib, but making sure that the 2 center sts were knit and fell in between the two lattice cables at the bottom portion of the sweater.
Seriously, that paragraph in the pattern made my head hurt.
