Help with cowl neck please?

I haven’t knitted anything for years, have nearly finished a sweater, just have the cowl neck to do.(sirdar pattern 8747) Starting with 64 stitches:-

1st row; K1, *yfwd,s1,k1,psso, rep from * to last stitch, k1.
1st row sets patt
Keeping continuity of patt as set (throughout) cont until cowl neck measures 20cm ending with a ws row.
cast off in patt.

I did what I thought for the 1st row but ended up with 33 stitches which is obviously not right.

Can anyone please help and tell me what I’m doing that is so obviously wrong? I live in the depths of French countryside so cannot ask any neighbours to help. . .

1st row; K1, *yfwd,s1,k1,psso, rep from * to last stitch, k1

When you do row 1, bring the yarn forward, slip one st, bring the yarn to the back over the needle, creating a yo, knit one st and then psso. The yo will add one st and the psso will decrease one st and you should end up with the same number you started out with.

Thank you so much for your quick reply, I will have a go at that in the morning when i’m a bit more with it.

when it says this row sets the pattern, do i do the same on every row or every other, (i’m sorry to be a such a numpty) !

Good question! As written, it sounds like every row. It makes a very lacy cowl. (Take a look at the picture if there is one.) If you don’t like that, you could do it every other row. The alternate row could be k1, purl to the last st, k1.
