Help with changing a snood pattern into more of a cowl?

Hi everybody! I am needing some help with a pattern. I am trying to make a cowl/ snood crossover, something in between. Am going to post a picture down below, so you can see what I’m trying to accomplish. I am using this pattern by DROPS, and have some questions about how to alter it?

---------NECK WARMER
Worked in the round on circular needle. Loosely cast on 210 sts on circular needle size 5.5 mm [US 9] with 2 threads Kid Silk. K 1 round and continue in rib, K2/P4 until piece measures 4 cm [1½”]. On next round dec 1 st in each P-section - see Decreasing tip-1 = 175 sts. Continue in rib, K2/P3, until piece measures 8 cm [3 1/8”]. On next round dec 1 st in each P-section - see Decreasing tip-2 = 140 sts. Continue in rib, K2/P2, until piece measures 12 cm [4 ¾”] and now change to needle size 6 mm [US 10]. K next round, at the same time dec 26 sts evenly (K tog approx every 4th and 5th st) = 114 sts. Insert 2 Marking Threads (MT) in piece, 1 at the beg of round and 1 after 57 sts. Continue in stockinette st. Remember the knitting gauge! When piece measures 18 cm [7”] dec 1 st on both sides of each MT - see Decreasing tip-3 = 110 sts. Repeat the dec when piece measures 24, 30 and 36 cm [9½”, 11¾” and 14¼”] = 98 sts. When piece measures 42 cm [16½”] inc 22 sts evenly –see Increasing tip = 120 sts. Change to needle size 5.5 mm [US 9] and continue in rib, K2/P2 until piece measures approx 48 cm [19”]. Bind off loosely in Rib.--------

sorry that was so long, firstly, I want to ask, is there any way I can do this pattern without doing the ribbing at the top? and also is there a way to do it without changing needles?

Lastly, what does P-Section mean?
sorry, I’m a relatively new knitter when it comes to more than basic stitches.

thanks so much!!!

wait… i massively edited this as i read the pattern wrong and had to correct myself… this is the right version of what i meant to say:

p-section are the purl sections of your k2/p4 rib…

at that part of the pattern it says “on next round (that’d be once the piece measures 4cm tall) decrease 1 stitch in each p-section”

so in each of those 4-stitch purls, you’ll decrease to 3… likely by doing a knit2together, although your pattern may have a specific decrease in mind (see decreasing tip 1 in the pattern’s notes)…

you’ll do that until you only have 175 stitches left, instead of the original 210.

HTH - X
.

You can see what kind of measurement you’re getting and then decide whether you need to change to the larger size needle. Alternatively you could not decrease so many sts and continue with the original needles.
If you leave out the ribbing at the end and continue in stockinette, you’ll have a curl in the knit fabric because that’s what stockinette does. You could change to garter stitch to help prevent that but ribbing is in keeping with the overall design.
Could you edit out some of the pattern or provide a link to it please? It raises copyright problems if the pattern is copied here even if the pattern is free.
