Help with Cat Bordhi moebius

Help! I’m making a shoulder wrap moebius out of Cat’s “Treasury of Magical Knitting” book. I was about 7 rounds into it when I noticed a mistake. I got frustrated and took the whole thing off the needle.
This thing was soooo huge in circumference that it when down past my thighs! It’s supposed to be 42’’ in circumference. What did I do wrong? Any ideas?

Same with all knitting, you have to check you gauge and make sure you’re getting the right sts/inch. Also check that you didn’t double the CO stitches or that you didn’t knit twice into every cast on stitch. I did that on half the stitches I CO the first one I tried.

Yes, I did make sure that I got gauge - 18 sts = 4 inches.
I guess all I can do is try again… Or wait until my lys opens tomorrow.

Then maybe you have the wrong number of stitches CO which can be tricky. When you scoop the yarn from the front, that’s 1 st and when you scoop it up from the back, that’s another stitch. So if you have 90 sts on your needle, there’s also going to be another 90 on the cord for 180 sts total. If you CO 180 sts to the needle, then there’s also 180 on the cord and you end up with 360 sts and a moebius down to your knees.

Oh… maybe I just found my problem. I though that every “loop that you scoop” counted as a stitch. After reading her instructions, I thought that if you counted the stitches on the needle and the ones that are beneath that you wouldn’t end up with enough. I’ll go read her instructions again.

If I understand you correctly though, you’re saying that I should just cast on half of the 192 because the rest of them are on the cable beneath?

Yeah, I think that sounds about right. What the heck, CO 96 and knit a few rounds, then put half the sts on another circ or scrap yarn and see if that’s the right size. These things knit up so fast its easy to re-do.

I’ll get it a try. Thanks for the advice.

IT is confusing! I have made several mobius’ … you really have to watch your cast on, very very easy to c.o. double what you want!

Show us photo’s when you are finished!

Nope, casting on half the stitches didn’t work. Too small… I went back and re-read her instructions and she says, “…for every two stitches you scoop, two matching sts appear on the cable beneath the needle. Do not count them when you cast on or you will end up with half the number of sts that you need.”

I think that I’ll just wait and try again when my knit group meets up tomorrow.

Yes, you only count the stitches that are on the needle, not both the needle and cable. So you should have 96 on the needle, plus 96 on the cable for a total of 192 which at your gauge should give you about 42-43" and that sounds about right.

i did the same thing… I miscounted the cast on:whoosh:

Well, I’m off to my lys this morning. This moebius cast on kept me up last night just going over it in my head. I tried it again, casting 96 “loops” so that there were 96 on the needle and 96 below on the cable. I went around several rounds, bound off, and ended up with the beginnings of a cowl.
Maybe this is just something that I need to see in person.

Make sure you twist the needle right - you might have somehow been knitting all one long piece instead of a moebius. Good luck. I tried making a little felted moebius basket and I got everything right (a little small but it was OK) except the yarn. Got it all finished and all excited to felt it and discovered that the wool was superwash.
Go figure.

I’m back from my lys. As far as I can tell, I make two mistakes, but neither of which was the number stitches that I cast on. That’s the only thing that I did right. :teehee:
My cable wasn’t crossed over at the right point and secondly I didn’t knit into the side of slip knot correctly and the half way point. You know, when the stitch marker is on the cable beneath the needles.
Hopefully, it will be smooth sailing from here on out.Crossed Fingers
I’m making this for my mother.

Great! Glad you got it figured out and it should go easily from now on. Getting it started right is the trickiest part.
