I have made a lovely afghan in all garter stitch. I need ideas for a border and instructions.:knitting:
Why do you want a border for it if it’s that nice as is?
I’m somewhat new to knitting and had a question about this…Wouldn’t the border be part of the pattern knitted? Example, if you were doing St st. and did a garter stitch border you would add that border to your existing pattern.
If a border was added after the project was completed would the “border” be crocheted?
No you could pick up stitches on all 4 sides and either knit a ruffle, or garter or lacey pattern. Doesn’t have to be crocheted or knit into the blanket itself.
if you feel it needs a border then you could pick up the amount of stitches thats required (ie the amount of rows on the length sides, and the amount of stitches cast on at the top and bottom). then do what ever patter you like really.
I have a question relevant to adding a ruffle around a blanket like this. if it’s a square blanket and I want to pick up stitches to add a ruffle, do you pick up sts and knit the ruffle on all 4 sides at once? (on some big circulars?) or do you do each side individually?
You could do either. If you knit them individually you have to sew the edges of the ruffles together; if you knit it all at once you have a lot of stitches by the time you’re done. Whichever you want to do.
thanks! i hate seaming so i think i’d rather do all 4 sides at once. i just didn’t know if that was physically possible.
You’ll have to use a really long circular needle or maybe 2 or 3, depending on how many sts you need.

Why not pick up stitches evenly all around, and knit an iCord border. iCord goes very well with garter stitch, and is simple enough that it won’t take away from the afghan. Instructions can be found here , on their knitting community section. Or, here there is a homemade video on the subject. Hope that helps.
