Help with adding a pocket lining

I’m getting confused on the directions which initially had me make 2 pocket linings casting on 14 sts and working each pocket lining for 5 inches. When it comes to adding them in the pattern, the pattern reads "After 3rd CC (contrasting color) strip, place pocket on next MC (main color) row as foll: K12, place 9 sts on hold, then with knit side facing, work across pocket lining sts: K2, [K2 tog] 5 times, k2; k to last 21 sts, rep from to once, k to end. I’m taking it that I’m supposed to attach the pocket lining which consist of 9 sts to the area covered by the k2 [k2tog] 5 times correct? The numbers don’t add up. What am I missing?

You’re going to place 9sts from the main body of the knitting on a holder. In place of those 9, work across the 14sts of the lining. The 14 sts are worked as: k2, (k2tog) 5x, k2.

If I do it 5x the k2,k2 tog - doesn’t that come out to 20 sts and then an extra 2 sts with the k2 at the end? I only have 14 sts on the holder. OR do I do it like you say BUT then the k2, k2tog can only be done 3x with on extra 2 sts to k.

Only repeat the directions in parentheses. So
k2
k2tog 5x
k2
That requires 2sts + 10sts + 2sts.

Got it! Thanks so much. I made this sweater coat a couple of years ago but I guess I was able to figure it out then. Old age! Thanks again :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Old age? Never.
Glad it helped and please do post a photo when you finish.

How do I share a picture when completed. I tried to upload the directions and they wouldn’t go. I have an iMac is that a problem with compatibility with the software used on this site? Thanks again!

You can use the landscape icon in the center top to upload a photo. iMac shouldn’t be a problem.
Since we can’t post large portions of patterns due to copyrights, it’s just as well that you didn’t upload the directions. Your explanation was very clear.
Enjoy knitting the rest of the sweater!
