I don’t understand what the symbol -: means. Can someone advise? Thanks!
Welcome to KnittingHelp!
It depends on where it’s used. It could be a symbol in a chart for knit or purl sts. It would be defined in the chart key.
It might be a place holder in a pattern with different sizes such as 2(-: 1: -: ) meaning skip this direction for the 2nd and 4th sizes.
What is the name of your pattern?

Thank you. It is the place holder option. I thought it probably meant to “skip”,
but wasn’t sure. I understand the instruction now.
Appreciate your help.
