Ok…I am working on a sweater, designed like a blazer, working on the sleeves, and just need some advice. Has anyone seen this term before, and exactly how do I do it? The sleeve is being knitted in two seperate sections, with buttonholes on one side. So far so good. Now comes time to join them. The back section was knitted and placed on a holder, then the front section was knitted.
Now, the directions say:
Leaving fron section on left needle, work 1st 18 stitches from back section holder; lap 1st 5 sts of front section over last 5 sts of back section and, working through both thicknesses, k 2 tog, work across remaining 18 stitches of front section…
So…what do they mean by lapping the stitches? Do I alternately place them together on the needle and knit together?
Any help would be appreciated.
Help with a pattern
It sounds like they just want you to put the first 5 sts of the front part over the first 5 sts of the back and then k2t the 1st st from front and back, then the 2nd etc. Just a way to join, I think. Is there a picture? If the next 18 are worked will (doesn’t look like you continue to connect in that way)there be a slit in the sleeve or do the rest of the front/back sts get grafted later?
Sadly, no picture…this pattern is from an old magazine I have had for years…When you say put the stitches from the back “over” the front, then knit together…how do you mean? Do I place the stitches alternately on the needle? Like the first stitch from back, then a stitch from front, knit together, then move onto the second stitch? I am just not exactly sure what they are saying.
Thanks for the help.
You could put them alternate on the same needle, but you don’t really need to…just hold the left hand needle for the back and the left hand needle from the front together so that the stitches lay one on top of the other. Then use your right hand needle to k2t by knitting the first st from the top and the first st from the bottom. Like 3 needle BO without actually binding off. Amy has a video on 3 needle bo if a visual would help.
Tbank you Kemp! I have done three needle bind off before, and that makes sense. I was thinking maybe something like that, but wasn’t sure. Now I can go ahead with confidence! YeeHah!
To answer your earlier question…yes, there will be slit at the bottom of the sleeve, with buttons and buttonholes. Once these two pieces join, you start shaping the sleeve and working up to the shoulder.
Sounds cool! Hope you’ll show it off here when you’re finished.
I will do that…it might be awhile before its completed…I keep meadering off to other projects…plan on knitting a fun fur sweater for my granddaughter. Just ordered the yarn, so when it comes in, I will be off and running.
