Help with a pattern

I am hoping someone can help with this little dilemma. I am making a sweater, which has a pocket on the front. I followed the directions(well, I at least believe that I have, went back and reviewed them, still would have done it the same way) Anway, the pocket came out incorrectly. It has you make the pocket opening, then also knit the pocket lining. So far so good, but when I finished it, it seems like it came out upside down. The pattern starts at the bottom of the left front, working up the front…till the directions for the pocket opening. The instructions are as follows:

Pocket opening: 1st row: Work 29 stitches, place last 17 sts worked on st holder for pocekt liner, work across remainings stitches.
2nd row: Work to st holder, cast on 17 stitches for pocket edge, work to end.

(from here, you continue with the rest of the front) Then the directions go back to the pocket as follows:
For pocket liner: Place sts from holder onto needle, attatch yarn and work for 3". Bind off. Sew edges of liner to jacket.

I have not sewn liner, because the opening is above the liner, and therefore the pocket would be upside down. I am hoping someone can give me some insight. Is there a step missing? Did I do something wrong? ( I know its hard without seeing it, but maybe you’ve seen this before?) If all else fails, I will remove the work back to where the pocket is, and finish the piece without the pocket. It would be OK without it, but its nicer looking with the pocket.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Sharon

It is hard to tell, but my first impression was that you would knit the liner down from where the stitches were on hold. Does that make any sense at all?

I have to say, though, that the person who figures out how to give proper, clear, specific directions for putting in pockets should be awarded a prize. When they are confusing, they’re impossible!

Ingrid,
What seems to be out of wack, is that the opening for the pocket is the row above the stitches for the liner. Even if you you could knit them down, you would have a hole, instead of a pocket! Its almost as if you would need two sets of stitches at the holder…one to bind off for the opening, and one to knit down for the liner. The way the pattern is, or at least the way it came out for me, is that the liner is going up, and not down, which it should. Pretty sure I won’t have a pocket!

Rereading what you wrote, I’m just as confused as you are.

Personally, I think it would look much better without the pocket! :rofling:

Is there a link to the pattern, or a picture?

Your funny…I would have to take a picture of it to post. I am thinking no pocket would be just perfect. If I get a chance, I will take a pic and send it. Currentlly I am at work. But I can’t stop thinking about the problem, and trying to fix it!
