Hi all. So I have a pattern for a top down raglan jumper that was created in the knits that fit app and I’ve created charts for adding a motif. I am trying to get this chart to fit Ravelry: Doctor Who Fair Isle pattern by Amy Schilling on the yoke and the rest of the jumper as an all over design. It’s driving me completely insane! I was hoping someone could help before I give up entirely. Thank you in advance!
Clever idea! What in particular is giving the problem?
The initial chart looks like 97sts including 2 edge sts on each side. How many sts at the widest in the yoke and how many in the body? Of course the yoke sts are going to increase from the neck to the widest point before the underarms. You’ll have to account for the increases in the chart motifs but there are extra charts that might be used to fill in until the widest part.
The daleks might fit well on the yoke with them naturally increasing.
The widest part of the yoke is 436 stitches. The body is 292. It’s the increases that are making it tricky.

What about piecing together some of the motifs plus some of the “various in-between chart alternatives” until you get to a spot where you can work a border and then the main chart? As the yoke widens you can add main motifs to replace some of the smaller ones.
That way you can design your own yoke then go to the main chart and repeat it about 3 times in the body. You can always fill in between chart repeats with some of the smaller geometric motifs (similar to the middle section of main chart).
Yeah, that’s a good idea. I’ll give it a go. Where the yoke increases show on the edge of the chart, should I leave them blank? Where I’ve done half of the yoke for repeating on both sides, including half of the top of both sleeves, I’ve been trying to add half a motif on the edges so it’s placed on the side of the sleeves. But I think that might be too tricky and I’m probably over complicating it.
You might wait until you’re working the sleeves to add the motifs at the edges (of the sleeves). You can leave the areas of the increases blank but mapping it out, cutting and pasting motifs may help you decide whether you should add something near the increases. Or you can decide this as you knit and find free space.

Often when I’m working out colour work i find it helps to just stare at other sweaters and imagine my colour design on the sweater. It can help me picture it on the type of construction i am planning, seeing how the motifs are fitted in and if i like that or not, how the sleeves are treated, how the motifs work with the neck or hem etc.
Heres an example of a page i would just stare at if i wanted to work raglan, its drops just because i find it easier, it could just as well be a ravelry search or google images search

I’m personally not keen on wearing raglan so dont make them but i must say i am often drawn to how the raglan lines work with the charts.
For some reason i imagined the daleks on a round yoke, even though you said the sweater was raglan. I think the raglan might be easier to place the motifs on.
It may be easier to keep the raglan lines in your background color. There’s a lot going on with the colorwork and that will help frame it. Maybe draw out your chart with a couple of the raglan lines colored in and see what you think.

That’s a really good idea. I looked at some of those and it helped me visualise it. I like raglan and round yokes, but I thought this jumper would look nice with raglan. I’ll see how it goes. Thank you for your help!
