Help With a Baby Hat: Beginner!

Hi all!

I am knitting my first hat. Starting simple with one that requires me to knit a seam. I was reading over the pattern and have a question or two.

Here is the pattern:
Instructions for Baby Hat
Cast on 60 sts
R1 – R10: (K1, P1) across
R11: Knit
R12: Purl
Repeat rows 11 and 12 6 more times (24 rows completed)
R25: (K4, K2 tog) across
R26: Purl
R27: (K3, K2 tog) across
R28: Purl
R29: (K2, K2 tog) across
R30: Purl
R31: (K1, K2 tog) across
R32: Purl
R33: (K2 tog) across
Instructions for Finishing
Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail.
Using the yarn needle, draw the yarn through the remaining stitches on the needle.
Pull tightly and secure the yarn.
Sew the back seam of the hat.
Sew in the loose ends.

My question is, why am I casting on 60 stitches if I am only doing 33 rows??

And is there a type of way I should sew in order to sew the back seam of the hat?

Thank you so much!

The number of stitches you cast on will determine the width of the piece you are knitting. The number of rows will determine the length of it. I don’t understand your question

but maybe someone else will. As for your seam, get there and worry about it then IMHO. :knitting:

Oh duh!!! You are so right. Well thank you…I don’t know why I confused length and width.

You’re welcome. It’s easy to get confused when you do something for the first time and knitting is no exception. I do it even when it’s not the first time. Sometimes the only way to understand how things work out is to actually do it step by step and see it take shape and become the finished item. The seaming isn’t a big deal, once you get there, so don’t worry about it.

This is your first hat so it’s understandable. The average head is about 22 1/2 inches around. The hat height is around 9 or 10 inches roughly. This is why there is a 66 stitch cast on and 33 rows. You’re going to end up with a rectangle laid on it’s long side.

Here’s a nice way to seam the hat. Most of your hat is in stockinette stitch as shown in the video (knit one row, purl one row) and this technique will also work on the ribbing on your hat too.
