i am still working on my little felted box. i have 2 sides and the bottom done. for the 3rd side the instructions say to pick up and k12 sts. i’m assuming this is to be done horizontally from the bottom of the piece but i’m not sure how to start since i have no yard on my needles. do i need to make a slip knot like i would to cast on? i’m not sure if the videos would help me or not as they are not working for me. i appreciate any suggestions!
Start with your yarn end leaving a 6 inch tail. No need to make a knot, after you’ve knit a couple rows it won’t be loose and you can weave it into the stitches when you’re done.
thanks for your response, but i’m still a little cofused. should i be working from left to right or vice versa? where does the 6" of yarn go? please pardon my ingnorance!
You pretend the piece you’re picking up the stitches from is like your left needle. The tail of yarn is just going to be loose. Start at the corner or wherever the pattern tells you, insert your right needle into the first stitch and wrap the yarn around just like you’re knitting it. Do this with each stitch you’re picking up until you have 12 on the needle. Then turn and it’s just like regular knitting. When you get back to the end of the row, just be sure you don’t pull that last stitch out. By the time you get the next row done, it won’t be a problem. Did you watch the video on picking up stitches here - http://www.knittinghelp.com/knitting/basic_techniques/misc.php That can help.
