Help understanding pattern

Confused with these instructions - i am knitting 1st size.

Decrease Rounds:
Round 1: *k4 (8, 10), k2tog *repeat to end
Round 2 and all even rounds: k entire round
Round 3: *k3 (7, 9) k2tog *repeat to end
Continue decrease pattern, knitting one less stitch before k2tog in every
odd round. When there are 10 (9, 9) sts left, k2tog 5 (4, 4) times.

Pattern is “Hearts on Repeat” free hat pattern on Ravelry.

I am unsure if I repeat round 1 after round 3 because if I interpret last instruction shouldn’t round 5 be *k2 k2tog, round 7 *k1 k2tog. Then what? Since I have started with 78 stitches, I still have lots of stitches on the needles after round 7. I have 52 stitches on the needles after round 3.

It doesn’t work out perfectly but you’re decreasing 13sts per decrease round for the first size.
You’re correct, round 7 is (k1, k2tog) repeated around the hat. Round 9 is k2tog repeated around the hat leaving you with 13sts. Then k2tog around 6 times with one stitch left over. Knit that stitch and then cut the yarn leaving a good sized tail and pass the yarn strand through the sts on the needle and tighten up.

Thank you for the pattern name. I’ve added this hat to my never-ending list of favorites. (But it’s near the top!)

Thank you Salmonmac. I did exactly as you said and it worked out great. Really easy and cute hat for a child. My first attempt at reading a chart and working fairisle strands. This was a good pattern to learn on as I had to learn to tuck a stitch on the heart rows with 5 stitches in a row.

I love patterns that teach something new. Good going to power through this. We’d love to see a photo of the hat!

I am trying to use up stashes of wool so colour combos are based on what is in the stash.

Great use of the stash. It’s amazing how well colors can work with each other. Thank you for the photos and enjoy wearing or gifting the hats!
