I’m a beginner knitter and trying out cable knitting for the first time. I’m in the process of knitting the band which is cable knit. I’ve cast off but not sure what this part of pattern means. Any suggestions?
Cast off in patt.
Row-end edge with 3 sts in g st forms lower edge of hat, and edge with just 1 st in g st is upper edge.
What is the name of your pattern?
It sounds like the directions are orienting the hat with the lower edge the one with 3 garter stitches and the upper edge the one with one garter stitch.
Cables are a wonderful technique to learn!

Thanks for your reply. I can see what you mean and it look like I’ll be able to pick up the stitches. It’s the first time I’ve done that too as well as learning to knit cable.
The pattern is a Laura hat from Sue Whiting Design I got it free online. It looked like a good first cable item. Cable is testing my patience but I’m enjoying the challenge
Very nice and a good way to learn both techniques.
Here’s a video for picking up sts which seems more difficult than it actually is. Markers at the 1/2 way and 1/4 way points help to make sure the pick up is even.
