Help -Unable to follow the instructions for the Back Chart

I am knitting 2nd Size : The written instructions are as follow:
Very confusing.

  1. is the inc row the 1st row of the chart? Increased to 144 stitches
  2. There are only 62 stitches on the chart !!!
Please advise. Thank you in advance.

a wrong side row.

What is the name of your pattern and designer?

The increase row comes after completion of the 42 rows of the chart. You can think of it as row 43.

Typically the chart would be repeated twice 62x2 with the final addition of that last stitch on the left outside the repeat. It’s not clear to me however how that aligns the pattern. Does the pattern give any further information at the beginning about how to read the chart?

this is the pattern and designer. The knitting instructions and the charts are really bad. There is no further information at the beginning about how to read the chart. If repeat after 62 stitches, the pattern does not align. I want to attach the pattern here but don’t know how to unfortunately.

It’s a very stylish jacket but the chart is painful. The link to Lovecrafts doesn’t work and there are no other projects although the page is 5 years old.

In order to work the repeat you would have to center the pyramid design, for example in the middle of the back and work outwards from there to where to begin the chart. This seems like a lot of unnecessary work for a paid pattern which should be supported by the designer or company. I recommend contacting Lovecrafts to see if they have a solution to the chart.

There contact form is available here.

What a confusing chart. I would definitely contact lovecrafts for clarification and an amended chart or Pattern correction to explain how to work it.

To me the 125 sts of the chart for the 2nd size begin at the line for 2nd size on the right, work across 62 sts to the dark line on the left of the chart, then work the next stitch to the left of that dark line and mark this as centre stitch for the centre back position, then ‘bounce’ back and work from the dark line on the left, back to the line marked as 2nd size which is again 62 sts. This will complete 62+1+62=125 sts and will have a symmetrical pattern centred on the jacket.

The next row, WS would also begin on the dark 2nd size line, again work to the left line, work the farthest left stitch for centre back, then bounce back again towards the right 2nd size line. This is not the ‘normal’ way of reading a chart (RS rows from right to left and WS rows from left to right) but instead each row is right to left, centre stitch, left to right. It will work if you can remind yourself which direction to go.

Another option would be to print the chart twice and cut it up and tape together so that it works as a complete chart which you can read in the more normal manner.

I looked a this chart many many times before I worked out how it works, there really should be an explanation on the pattern, especially a paid for pattern which should have been checked.

Hope this helps.

DO NOT BUY THIS PATTERN. UNCLEAR INSTRUCTIONS

I just edited my post with how the chart can be worked, I hope it helps.

Hi Creations, I only see that working at the top arrowhead portion of the charts, rows 34-40. I’ve turned this upside down and backwards and I don’t see it working for the middle pyramid (chevron) or the lower B motif.

I agree with DB123. Unless Lovecrafts has a corrected chart, don’t do this one!

Thank you so much for taking the time to help me but I am still struggling.
The problem starts from row 15 begin from R on the dark 2nd size line towards left line, then work the last left stitch outside the dark line (63 stitches). However in order to complete the pattern, would it be correct to start from 4th stitch from the right again?
Yes I have sent a complaint to Lovecraft. Got the wool specially for this pattern. I hope they will send me a satisfactory response soon.

If you work from the right dark line for the 2nd size and include the last stitch on the left outside the dark line (red dot just below row 15) then you would begin at the stitch before the dark line for the first size (blue dot just below row 15) on the right side. That way the base of the pyramid will have 11sts.

That’ll work up through row 29. Rows 30-33 aren’t a problem because they are straight knits or purls as are rows 41 & 42. For the upper motif (rows 34-40) you can work within the bracket for size 2 but include the leftmost stitch out side the bracket for size 2.

That adds up to 122sts (62+1+59) which doesn’t quite make it to the 125sts which you have on the needle so there would be a gap at one or both sides.

OK, it works in my logic but perhaps I’m wrong. For me the centre back is where you placed a red dot. The row begins at 2nd size line on right, works to red dot and then mirrors back. Making the base of the pyramid 11 sts (5 moving right to left, 1 as red dot, 5 moving left to right) as you said in your post. It makes the whole jacket mirrored at the centre back (pyramids ,amd chevrons). It was the pyramid and the B motif I was looking at when I worked it out. Maybe I didn’t describe it well.

Stitch 1 (for 2nd size) through to 62, then stitch 63, then stitch 62, 61, 60, 59… through to stitch 1. Both sides exactly symmetrical in all motifs.

Oddly, on the pattern pics there is a clear side seam and none of the pattern aligns fully, so they didn’t work the pattern right across when making the sample.

Maybe this helps? I have cropped to 2nd size and mirrored. This is what I believe to be the second half of the chart. Work the chart given to centre back, work the extra stitch, then work this chart, this chart reads as normal right to left. You’ll have to write on the row numbers.

That’ll work too. Creations, can you flip the chart so that the orientations of both are the same?

Sorry salmonmac, not sure what you mean about flipping. The first half of the stitches are worked with the chart given in the pattern (including the centre stitch you marked wih a red dot) 63 sts, then the second half of the stitches are worked as a mirror, which is the flipped chart I posted which can be read right to left for stitches 64 to 125.

If I flip this it will just result in being the original chart again.

If the 2 charts are printed and taped together they will be the full row, symmetry at centre back.

I’m looking at rows 34-40 in the original chart. Aren’t they reversed or am I reading the chart incorrectly?

Yes they are reversed, or a mirror, I believe they are supposed to be, chevrons running from centre back like arrows pointing towards centre front

<<<<< centre back >>>>>

The entire pattern is reversed for the second half of the stitches, making fully symmetrical pattern

Thanks, that’ll work!

Thank you Salmonmac & Creations for taking so much time and effort to help me to resolve the problem. You both are amazing. I would have to give up this knitting project without help from both of you. Hopefully I won’t encounter further issues with the rest of the knitting instructions & charts for this jacket. Until now I have not received any response from Lovecraft !

Thank you both once again.

Are you okay with how to work it now?

Do you know how to work the next row which is the wrong side row?

You probably didn’t realize what a knitting adventure you were about to embark on. Hope all goes well from here and we get to see a photo when you finish. Use markers and lifelines and have fun with it!
