I can’t fathom the following pattern…if anyone can translate this into something more meaningful i would really appreciate it…
Firstly there are a series of 10 rows that create a pattern for the left side of a cardigan (that i won’t bother to type). Then it goes:
These 10 rows form the cable patt and start side seam and front opening edge shaping. Cont in patt, shaping side seam by inc 1 st at beg of 13th and 2 foll 14th row and at same time 2 st at front opening edge of 3rd and every foll 6th row (47).
Inc 2 sts at front opening edge only of 4th and every foll 6th row until there are (53).
You always continue working the 10 rows of the pattern. If your first inc row happens on the 3rd row of the pattern, you inc on that row, then the next inc row will be on the 14th row after that, which may be on on the 7th row of the 10 row pattern. You will also be increasing on the front edge at the 3rd row (your 3rd row of the pattern) and every 6th row after that. So you have 3 things going on, the 10 pattern rows, then the inc rows - the pattern rows will be worked continuously, with the inc rows done within them. You can place a marker in a stitch on the first inc row at the front edge, then count up and when you’ve worked 5 more complete rows, do another increase row on the next one. Also mark the 13th row where you do the first side inc, work 13 then inc on the next one. Move the markers up to next inc row and start over with your count. It sounds harder than it is, really.

I have tried to write out this pattern before embarking on it again. It turns out that i will end up increasing 2 on the front open edge of a cable row (part of the 10)…can this be write? I presume i start the cable on the original count or do i include the 2 new stiches in the count meaning the cable shifts to the right?
Is there a dec to offset the inc? It would help and save a lot of time if you tell us the name of the pattern, or provide a link to it or a picture. Otherwise we’re working blind.
Okay, these are the increases to create the shaping. The cable stay in the same place, you may want to put markers before those sts before you inc so you know where it is.
If you notice, all the front edges sts are moss st the first 3 sts at the beg of the WS rows and the last 3 sts at the end of the RS rows. The cable sts are inside that. You don’t do the incs at the edge, but inside the 3 edge sts and 8 cable sts.
OK I give up (I took a break for the hols and tried this bloody pattern again)…it still isn’t making sense. I have written it out line by line and it doesn’t work out. Does anyone have this pattern written out LONGHAND line by line that they could share with me. I’ve done he back and arms but am ready to toss the lot in the bin at the moment. Thanks in advance…
Hi jlepin, We’ve all been at the point that you’re at with this pattern. It really is a very good looking sweater and you’ve come so far already. Give it another rest and come back in a few days with fresh eyes. Make an outline (just a numbered list of rows) indicating the increases and the cables and look at the photo and line drawing as a general guide. You can do this one and you’ll be really pleased with the result. I admire you already for accomplishing so much moss stitch (I think it’s gorgeous but such hard work.)
Thanks again. I have tried writing out the pattern…i guess i am missing something logical along the way. I was hoping someone else might have mapped it out line for line so i could check where i am going wrong. I am going to try and find a store with someone that can help.
