i have done great so far leanring to cast on and then knitting the first row, BUT i keep getting it too tight to the point i can’t even menuever the needles in and out. im just practicing so i just keep pulling it all off and tyring to start again with a looser cast on, but then i have 2 problems i come across:
1.the cast on looks sloppy, but i figure i will get better as i learn.
as i knit the first row it becomes tighter and tighter and by the time i get to knitting the second row i cannot even do it and it looks horribly sloppy.
To make your cast on looser but be able to keep it neater, try casting onto a larger needle…
For the knit stiches try holding your yarn differently. If you have it wound around your pinkie, try weaving it through you fingers or just let it hang in your palm.
And make sure that you are pulling the yarn from the skien or ball and that you have slack so that the ball isn’t pulling on your work
pregodego,
I had this same problem when I began knitting. I couldn’t knit because I couldn’t get the needle into the stitches they were soooo tight. What I did was start experimenting with different ways of holding the yarn in my right hand. I finally settled with wrapping it around my pinkie then over my ring finger, under the middle and then back over my index finger. On some of the videos on this site they show you different ways to wrap the yarn. Some people say they don’t wrap it at all and just let the skein determine the pressure, altough this doesn’t work for me.
Let me know if that helps. Also, what cast on method are you using? Cable?
i did find my “own” way of wrapping it, it’s like around my middle finger a few times and then using my pointer finger to help control a bit…hard to explain lol
and im using the long tail cast on. i like the cast on…not sure if it makes a difference…
if i do cast onto a larger needle, do i then knit onto the smaller needle? and then once off , again knit onto the smaller needle until im using both smaller needles?

When I first started knitting, I used to give each cast on stitch and extra tug to make sure it was nice and tight. As a result, sometimes the stitches would be too tight to knit.
If you do this extra tug, STOP! Castning the next stitch on will keep the previous one tight.
Don’t worry about the cast-on not looking as neat as before, you can kind of stretch it around a bit later.
thanks to everyone!! tonight i was able to cast on, knit 3 rows and purl 2!!! then i took a break. im so so excited and it still looks a bit sloppy but that will get better with practice i know
