help: Sock Heel on the Berry Special Socks (by Stoneknits on Ravelry)

Hi there,

This is my first time doing colorwork in knitting and surprisingly my first sticking point is with turning the heel! I copied the pattern below and I’m confused about how Row 16 fits into the sequence established in rows 2-15. How would I end up with 10 unworked stitches on one side and 20 on the other? Thanks in advance!

Row 1: K30 on N2
Row 2 (WS): Sl1, p28 (leaving 1 st unworked at the end) and turn work to the RS.
Row 3: Sl1, k27 (this leaves 1 sts unworked at the end), turn work.
Row 4: Sl1, p26 (turning at the last st bef the gap), turn work.
Row 5: Sl1, k25 (turning at the last st bef the gap), turn work.
Row 6: Sl1, P24 (turning at the last st bef the gap), turn work.
Row 7: Sl1, k to 1 st bef the gap, turn work.
Row 8: Sl1, p to 1 st bef the gap, turn work.
Work rows 7 & 8 until… Row 16: S1, P9, (turn work)
You will have 10 unworked sts on the left side and 10 unworked sts on the right side of your 10 purl sts.

Welcome to KH!
What is the name of your pattern?
Each time you work across the sts on needle 2 you turn one stitch before the last turn. Unworked sts accumulate on each side of the center 10sts. After row 16 you’ll have the center 10sts with 10sts on each end of the row.

Thank you! I’m happy I found this resource. It’s the Berry Special Socks by Stoneknits on Ravelry. I think it’s behind a paywall but it’s a pretty standard top down sock with a no-wrap short row heel using the magic loop. I don’t know why, but I ended up with 7 unworked stitches on both sides after finishing row 16, so looking at the wrong side from left to right I have 13 unworked stitches, 9 purled, 1 slipped, and 7 unworked. I wrote out the steps I completed below, with “left” referring to the unworked stitches.

1: k30, turn

2: sl 1, p28, 1 left

3: 1 left, sl1, k27, 1 left

4: 1 left, sl1, p26, 2left

5: 2left, sl1, k25, 2 left

6: 2left, sl1, p24, 3 left

7: 3left, sl1, k23, 3 left

8: 3 left, sl1, p22, 4 left

9: 4left, sl1, k21, 4 left

10: 4 left, sl1, p20, 5left

11: 5left, sl1, k19, 5left

12: 5left, sl1, p18, 6left

13: 6left, sl1, k17, 6left

14: 6left, sl1, p16, 7left

15: 7left, sl1, k 15, 7left

16: 7left, sl1, p9, 13left

I have also recently frogged the work up until row 1 in case I made a mistake with the “repeat” directions

Let’s see if @engblom a sock knitter extraordinaire can advise.

How many stitches do you have all around? I can see that you mentioned Magic Loop, but the instructions mention “N2”. Do you have two or one needles? If you have two, how have you divided the stitches?

I have two needles, 30 sts on each

I have not knitted these socks, nor do I have the full instructions, but it looks like from row 7 forward you will leave two stitches unworked instead of one. Reading the instructions you posted it looks like in rows 1-6 you always turn at the last stitch before the gap, but from row 7 up you turn at one stitch before the gap. I do not have time to go through this in my head nor on paper, but would that fix the problem?

No worries, thank you for coming to the rescue! That would fix it. Thank you both for your time!
