I have a sweater pattern that starts from the bottom of the sweater, working upward to the neckline. After shaping the arm holes, I am at a total loss
. I attached a picture of the pattern instructions I am stuck at.
At the neckline, I have 2 questions:
- It says to pattern 12 stitches. Does this mean to continue in pattern as row 8 mentioned for the armholes above?
2(a). I do not understand the rest of the neckline instructions at all! Is it saying to slip the next 27 stitches onto Stitch Holder (1), and also slip the next remaining 12 stitches onto a separate Stitch Holder (2)? What stitches am I decreasing at this point? I am so confused.
2(b). When the neckline instructions say “Next row”, I am just 100% utterly confused when it begins talking about rejoining the wool… sorry
I would appreciate any and all help. So much. I am worried about this gift now…
Another image of the picture… without it being cut off at all. Thank you!!!
Welcome to the forum!
Yes, pattern across 12sts means to continue with the pattern established in the previous rows.
You’re going to be working one shoulder first and letting the other sts sit on holders or waste yarn. You could put the center 27 on a holder and leave the remaining sts (probably 12) on the left needle for the second shoulder. Ignore them for now and work the decreases on the 12 sts you just patterned across.
For these 12sts, dec one at the neck edge on the next row and then every other row. At the same time, continue to dec at the armhole edge.
Thank so much for responding! I really appreciate it. I understand It much more now but the only thing I don’t understand now is the decrease pattern. Is it saying to decrease the first stitch next to the neckline, then continue as normal with the pattern in Row 6 and 7… and then decrease the first stitch next to the neckline… and then continued as normal with the pattern in Row 6 and 7, etc? Could anyone explain it to me in more detail? I’m sorry if this is much simpler than I am reading it to be…
If you call that Next Row under Shape Neck, row 1 then you would decrease at the neck edge on every other row. This would be rows 2,4,6,8 etc. Essentially, every time you begin a row at the neck edge, work a decrease. At the same time you’re continuing the pattern and the armhole decreases until you get to 3sts.
I think i understand now, thank you so much! I’m so glad i found this community.
OK, give it a try. If it’s still not working out, come back and ask again. Glad to have you with us!
