Help! Scalloped Border Woes

Can you help me? I am trying to knit a hat from a pattern in a book and the edge is giving me fits. It’s a beautiful scalloped edge in the photo.

Here is the edge pattern:
CO 97 st.
Row 1: K1, (yo, K5, lift 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th sts over the first st) repeat () to last stitch, yo, K1.

When I do this the way I think I am supposed to, I wind up with something like 32 stitches left on the needle. However, the pattern at the end of the edge rows says I should wind up with 80 sts! The other 3 rows in the pattern do not show any increases, so I assume I am doing something wrong.

Please help, thanks in advance!

The increases are in the YOs, you’ll lose about 2 sts for each repeat. But there must be something on the other rows to increase… :??

Hmm…I was accidentally slipping instead of doing YO…but now I still am stuck. Here is the whole edge pattern:
CO 97 stitches.
Row 1: K1, *yo, K5, lift 2nd,3rd,4th,5th sts over 1st st, rep from * to last st, K1.
Row 2: P1, *(P1, yo, K1 tbl) into next st, P1, repeat from * to end
Row 3: K2, K1 tbl, *K3, K1 tbl, repeat from * to last 2 sts, K2.

I don’t think I understand the directions in row 2. What does “into next st” mean? I knitted up a small sample, and mine has holes in it and does not have as many rows as it’s supposed to at the finish. My mistake is somewhere in row 2. I was just sort of ignoring the “into next st” part because it didn’t make sense. Is this some additional increase?? Thanks again-

Oh-I forgot:
Row 4: P2 together, P to end. 80 sts.
(then you work in stockinette to length)

Okay that should work. Row 2 has a double increase adding 2 sts per repeat. To do it, purl into the next st, take the yarn over the needle to the back (YO) and knit the same st in the back leg. The YOs make holes so they’re supposed to be there.

Sounds like an interesting pattern, I’d love to see it when you’re done.

Hmm, so I purl the stitch, but I don’t take it off of the left needle; do the YO; then knit into the back loop of the stitch I just purled? Then that st can come off the left needle and I continue in pattern?

If I’m counting correctly, that will add two stitches side-by-side, one from the purled stitch that I didn’t “finish,” and one from the YO?

Again I can’t thank you enough. This little hat looks so cute, and simple to knit up if I could just get the edge-the rest is just a plain stockinette. I will send pics if I ever get it right! :stuck_out_tongue:

Yep, that’s right on both questions.
