Help! Rejoin yarn and K up?

Hi all,

I’m at the tail end of making a small halter top; I have finished the main body of the top and am at a loss how to start the edging.

Instructions are:

“Using No. 12 needles, and with RS of work facing, rejoin yarn at neck edge of right front and K up 66 sts down right side edge, rib across sts on holder. Rib 4 rows. Cast off in rib.
Work left side edge in same way, beg with sts on holder.”

Having looked up YouTube videos, I understand how I rejoin yarn, but I have no idea how to “K up 66 sts down right side edge” (I have been decreasing a st every second row on both sides by K1, S1, K1, psso (on one side) and K2, K1 (on the other), so how do I join to, essentially, ‘closed’ stitches around the neckline? The stitches that are on my holders are the back of the halter top.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Eva

You’re going to “pick up” or “pick up and knit” stitches along the edge–creating new stitches to work with. You don’t have to do anything in particular to “rejoin” the yarn. Just leave a tail to weave in later.

I’d suggest that to keep them even, break up the section you’re working on into quarters with a little piece of yarn to make sure you pick up the same number of stitches in each section.

Put the stitches that are on the holder onto a needle before working them.

Thank you, Ingrid!

I tried to find a video, but thought that ‘picking up’ stitches was for dropped stitches.

Thanks again.
