I knew I was going to get in trouble when I got to this part but tried not to think about it.
I made a sweater a long time ago and forgot how but I can’t figure some patterns anyhow. Well it’s the Vogue Fall 2006 Cowl Neck Sweater 20
on page 130. I’ve done the back, now I’m at the top of the front.
Here’s where I get bogged down:
Front
Neck Shaping
Cont raglan shaping AT SAME TIME, bind off center 14 sts for neck
and WORKING BOTH SIDES AT ONCE ???
bind off 3 sts from each neck edge once ???
dec 1 st every other row 5 times.
Both sides? Does that mean bind off 3 sts on the next purl side
or does that mean bind off 3 sts on each side of where I just bound off and do I do that on the next row?
Then WHERE do I dec 1 sts every other row? In the middle, I mean either side of the bound off sts. Or at the edge like the raglan decreases I’ve been doing? oh geez

You’ve been doing the raglan shaping at the outer edge. They want you to continue doing that, but ALSO bind off the center 14 stitches and bind off and decrease the stitches at the neck edge.
What you’ll have to do is work the raglan dec, knit to the center, bind them off, work to the end, ending with the raglan.
On the next row, you’ll work the raglan, work across to the neck, but since you can’t bind off at the end of the row, you’ll bind off the first three on the other side of the neck, finish that row, and then bind off the 3 on the other side of the neck on your way back on the next row. The bind offs won’t be on the same row, but that won’t matter.
After that you can dec at the neck edge on the same row each time, probably the right side.
Ok Ingid, you’re wondeful ro reply so quickly… I’ll tackle this in the morning. I get confused so easily… wish I could jsut look at the sweater and know what to do…
get back to you… THANKS so much
one of these days maybe i can be a Masterful Knitter!
I think I got the first part. But one more question if possible:
why decrease only one stitch every other row? Doesn’t it have to be decrease 1 stitch each side of the bound off stitches, ?
what shaping are they looking for? I’m trying to figure out where to decrease since it’s only dec 1 st which doesn’t make sense…
1 st either side of the neck would make sense… ? :??
WAIT A MINUTE… I was just doing this and uh, they didn’t have me break the yarn and attach a new one on other side of bound off stitches??? That’s impossible, you have to do that! I’m going to take a picture.
(you people who make sweaters all the time stop laughing)
