Help Reading This Pattern

I finished my first baby blanket last week! Yay! And I’m working through a dischcloth with a more complicated pattern that I will have done this week.

And next, I am moving on to a delightful headband. I may make five of them. However, I’m having a hard time understanding the instructions for row 2: They are:

Row 2: K3, *yo, K2tog *{4 times}, K last 2 stitches

If I’m reading this correctly (and I’m beginner, so thanks for the patience!), I should:

knit 3 stiches
yarn over, knit 2 stiches something something (k2tog??) — do this four times
knit remaining 2 stitches

If anyone wants to see, the full pattern, it’s here.

You’re right. You knit the first 3 stitches of the row, then do a yarn over followed by a decrease (k2tog = knit 2 stitches together), repeat yo & k2tog 3 more times, then knit the last 2 stitches.

The yo coupled with the k2tog maintains the same number of stitches while creating a lacy effect. (The yo increases the number of stitches by 1 while the k2tog decreases the total number of stitches by 1.)

Thank you!!!

So ktog means to decrease? How would an increase be written?

The YO - yarn over - is an increase. There are others, too, this one give you the hole, making it lacy.

You can check out the video page right here for other increases and decreases.

k2tog is only one type of decrease. And as Mirl56 said, the yarn over is one kind of increase. Check out the videos at the top of this page (“Free Videos” tab) to learn how to make these (and other) increases and decreases.

There are lots of increases and decreases. Go to the top of the page and click on Videos. Then click on increases or decreases and you can see what they all look like as well as the names.
