Help reading an Afghan pattern!

Hi everyone!

I’m beginning this beautiful basketweave afghan and am having difficulties reading this pattern. I feel as if it is missing something or that I’m just overcomplicating it. Please see the pattern below:

[B]1st row:[/B] (WS). *K10. P10. Rep from * to
last 10 sts. K10.
[B]2nd row:[/B] Knit.
[B]3rd to 14th row:[/B] As 1st and 2nd rows
6 times more.
[B]15th row: [/B]K20. *P10. K10. Rep from * to
last 10 sts. K10.
[B]16th row:[/B] Knit.
[B]17th to 28th row:[/B] As 15th and 16th rows
6 times more.

Last 28 rows form Check Pat. Cont in Pat
until work from beg measures approx 48”
[122 cm], ending on a 14th or 28th row
of pat.
Knit 16 rows (garter st). Cast off knitwise
(WS)

I’m so confused with the instructions for the [B]1st row[/B] & [B]15th row[/B], which have an even amount of stitches that I repeat until the “last 10 sts,” where I then K10. But if I continue the Repeat stitches, it seems that I repeat knitting so that it is K20 at the end of each row.

Please help!

If you look at the blanket, the only way to have it look like that is if you do the 20 rows of garter st. So just follow the pattern!

Thanks, but that doesn’t really answer my question about the K20 issue at the end of the WS. I get the edging (which I’ve already finished and did not include in my post above), but I need help on the checkboard pattern.

:oops: I’m so sorry, I didn’t understand what you were trying to say. I can’t really answer you then. sorry.

Following the pattern as written will produce a 10 stitch border in garter stitch down each side with alternating squares of stockinette and garter stitch in the main body of the afghan. As the photo with the pattern is in a dark color it doesn’t show the pattern well. Yes, you will knit 20 sts at the ends of odd rows 15 -28. In this case the garter square and the garter border are not separated.
