I’m in the process of making my first hat, I’ve completed the beginning ribbing pattern and am about to start the top shaping, but I have a question about the pattern.
Round 1: ssk, p1 [k2, p2] 1 (2,4)x, k2, p1, k2tog
I’m using worsted weight yarn, and the directions sayInstructions are written for super bulky weight yarn with changes for bulky and worsted in parentheses. If only one number is given, it is for all yarn weights.
So does this mean for the first round, I would ssk, p2, and then I wasn’t sure about the 1 (2,4)x thing, does it mean I should repeate the ssk, p2, 4 times? Or something else completely… I can read the rest of the line.
Okay, you’re using worsted weight, which is the last number in the parentheses. These () are parentheses; these [] are brackets. I’ve never seen a pattern written quite like that before; it threw me off for a bit, too! So what you do is this:
ssk p1 [k2, p2] 4x (four times), k2, p1, k2tog
For your reference (and you probably already knew this), if you see stitches in parentheses or brackets, you’re going to repeat those stitches, in that order, a defined number of times. The number of times you’ll repeat that sequence of stitches is usually given right after the close bracket or parenthesis.
To sum it all up, your first row should look like this:
ssk p1 k2 p2 k2 p2 k2 p2 k2 p2 k2 p1 k2tog
